Why is Polygamy illegal in the United States?

It's not that I am against it nor am I with it, I am just wanting to know how and why this idea came to be. And how bad is the idea of having more than 1 wife. I am not married and am not really sure if I will consider marriage, but even so, you can't love more than 1 person now can you?

All the states in the US took their constitutions and marriage laws from European and English law, where polygamy was already outlawed.

Polygamy fell out of favor with Christians in the first couple of centuries after Christ. It was seen as 'too Jewish', or it was part of the drive to make priests celibate to keep them from having big estates and getting too much power. Polygamy is another way of building power bases. It allows a man to make multiple family ties to other powerful families and become part of the ruling class. Those running the Catholic church at the time didn't want other men getting power outside their hierarchy and challenging them.

Monogamy turns out to be far superior in the modern world of central government. In countries that value equality, freedom and human rights, it helps allow women to fully participate in the economy, and it doesn't produce a big underclass of permanently unmarried men like polygamy.

Countries that have polygamy all suppress human rights in order to keep women in line and to try to control the unmarried men. Those men tend to turn to gangs and rebellions. At a certain size, that group will destabilize the government. All these countries are behind the modern world economically unless they have our oil money.

There is a lot more to it than just who you love. Marriage is the most basic building block of any government and has a drastic effect on how every community works.

Lets look over your last statement.

Do you lover your mom, your sister, you cousins, you gf/bf, you last gf/bf, the one before that?

Then yes, it is possible to love more than one person. You've never been stuck between two people you love and weren't able to decide because you loved them both?

Love is never ending and expendable. It goes on forever.

I beileve it's illegal because people think its a form of "pimping" or degrading of women. But they fail to see that these women are choosing these lives, just as women choose to be "pimped."

It's one of those laws that people argue about on a continuous basis.

Its only illegal to have multiple marriage licenses you want to "marry" multiple people just put on ring on there finger and call yourself married if you really want to live that kind of lifestyle than a piece of paper from the government shouldn't really matter

The practice of polygamy is against the teachings of the bible, and seeing as how the majority of the US is composed of Christians, the majority of citizens in the US are going to find polygamy wrong according to their morals.
