wood flooring - bevels?

Does anyone have experience of the benefits or otherwise of beveling with wood flooring?

Some types have micro-bevelling which looks as if it will get full of dirt?

the micro beveling is used on prefinished flooring so the edges don't stick up higher than the one next to it, they will not flush up like a sanded floor but the finishes are factory applied and tougher than what can be done at your home

dirt and floors are like bacon and eggs ... they just go together. You gotta expect that. Modern manufactured floorings seldom have a bevel or kurf on them, but the solid wood type may. The only thing you can do is use a floor filler followed by a floor sealer on that latter type to fill any flaws or cracks. DO NOT attempt to fill the bevels! The filler will not be stable and may flake out later. And it will look really bad too. They make the filler in many colors to match your spiecies of wood flooring. You can probably find a floor type without the bevels if you look hard enough but some cracks are inevitable due to woods natural shrinking and swelling so that even the best milling of the boards will have some imperfections.

Other than that ... don't be such a germiphobe LOL , dirt is natural and essential for developing an infants full immune system abilities. Too clean of a home is UNHEALTHY, as counter intuitive as that may sound. We have a very BAD cultural prediliction against germs and dirt. And thats why there are more children with allergies and sickly: because they were never exposed to the proper minute amounts of these germs and pollens in their youth.

What i am saying is dont make a big deal about a few cracks or bevels . life is too short to be so micro managing :)

Take care and i hope this helps.

By creating a valley below the surface of the adjoining, beveled flooring provides the perfect dirt and dust trap. It was intended to appear hand-crafted even though no craftsman would've ever used bevels when joining the visible, or top, side of floor planking. Bevels were sometimes used on the back side to simplify making a tight fit, but on the backside only. There is no practical benefit.

The micro-bevels won't fill with dirt. Simple sweeping or Swiffering is enough to get any dirt out of the low points.
