Can a 6 month old baby over eat?
I have a 6 month old son. He weighs 20 lbs. He nurses about every 3 hours through the day and night. He can also pound back the solids. He can eat a piece of toast with hummus and half a banana in one sitting and still seems like he could eat more if I offered it to him. I always nurse him before feeding him solids. Does anyone have experience with big eaters/big babies? I feel like it is too much.

My 18 month old daughter has always been a big eater like that and my doctor told me not to worry about it as long as her weight is in the normal range. He gave me a chart, and I'm looking at it right now and for 6 months old it was between 14.4 and 21.2 lbs, so your baby is in that range, so he's fine and it's nothing to worry about. My doctor told me to let her eat as much as he wanted as babies know better than us how much they need, and they will eat when hungry and stop when full. must be that he's moving around a lot and burning off a lot of those calories. or having a growth spurt which requires extra calories. so don't limit how much he eats.

He cannot overeat at the breast. As for solids, make sure you're still only offering one meal at this age since you want to make sure that the majority of his nutrition comes from breastmilk. Also, make sure that you're only offering healthy foods -- fruits, veggies, whole grains, protein, etc.
Something else to think about... often, breastfed babies really pack on the pounds up to 6 months, and then their weight gain really slows down, especially once they start crawling. My oldest daughter gained less than 2 pounds between 6-12 months.
Also, you don't say how big your son was at birth, but my girls were about 17 pounds at 6 months, and my son was nearly 19 lbs. They were all born at around 7 1/2 - 8 lbs. At a year, my son was 24.5 lbs. All my kids are at perfectly healthy weights now. Some babies are just chunkier than others. I'm guessing your son is just fine.

You are feedinghim WAY to much. If you havent seen a pediateician recently you needbto do that because the pediatricion will even tell you thats way to much plus he shouldnt be eating solids like that yet. If he is eating anything other then formula or breast milk it should be baby food and should be just chewing on stuff like dry toast. I used to over feed my oldest like that and now he has a problem with that part of his brain that controls appitite. It doesnt work right ro make him feel full. He will eat until he pukes if i let him. If you dont do.something about this now, your child may be over weight when he gets older. The more you eat, the more thw stomech stretchs to make room for more food so cut down. He will be hungery all the time for a while but eventually the stomech will shrink and he will be eating a normal amount. Talk to a ped soon!

My son was 20lbs at 4 1/2mo. He's 5mo now and still eats every 2hrs (he breastfeeds as well) I'd say as long as he's not throwing up and your pediatrician visits go well then you have nothing to worry about. You're lucky he accepts solids, my son won't even entertain the thought of a bottle, nonetheless baby food even! He's probably just a big healthy boy! :)

Yes, or he may be just growing and needs it. Try giving him water before and during the meals. Is he teething? Just chewing seems to soothe if so. Try teething rings for him to chew on.
