how can people make money by selling items on ebay for 1 cent with free shipping?

there are many people who start items on ebay for 1 cent with free shipping - which is the lowest price

you can start anything on ebay for - some of these items aren't worthless - so how do these people make money doing this - why would anyone go to the trouble to list an item and then pay to ship it to someone if it weren't going to sell for very much. Sometimes it might be worth it if the bidding goes high - but what if the bidding goes for less than the postage - then why would people do this?

Is there a reason? For example - I see people selling stamps this way - hundreds of them and most of them are worthless and most of them sell for less than $0.50 - but some sell for $20 or $30

- but not very many of them - I'm trying to understand why someone would bother to do all this work and get pretty much nothing. - I see this on Amazon too - where many books sell for one cent. Why bother for a penny - you can't make anything doing that - so why do people do it?
