Where do all the confiscated dirtbikes go?

Iv been looking to get a dirtbike but I do t want to spend a arm and a leg for one. I was wondering what happined to all the dirtbikes and quads that are stollen then confenscated by the police. Do they try to find the original owner? Or do they have a stock like of them just sitting somewhere? Are they for sale?

    Bedouin told you correct.

The police make an attempt to locate the owners, but if they cannot, they will have auctions for the items that are not recovered.

Don't get your hopes up too high. Most of the items in a police auction are pretty tore up. Here is a link that does auctions for municipalities:

You will have much better luck on Ebay, BikeFinds, CycleTrader and Craigslist.

Hello Matt, In each state in Australia there is a common process which might also be done in your neck of the woods.

When the police recover stolen property including bikes the legal owners are contacted, if that can't be done after being held for 6 months they are sent to a Government auction that must be advertised in a newspaper that is distributed state wide, not a local paper. You can bid on any item of interest, it can be viewed before the auction but engines are not to be started so you are bidding on an unknown so far as the motor goes; it might be in good condition or might have been thrashed to a standstill, you have no way of knowing. For that reason bids are usually low.

I found about recovered good by asking at my local police station. No harm in asking....
