Faith Without Works Is Dead
James 2;14-17
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

The works of faith are two-fold.
1. Obeying the commandments, or not sinning.
2. Good deeds. It's not a sin in the traditional sense to refrain from doing a good deed, but you cannot live according to Christ's example if all you do is look out for Number 1.
Works do not get you into heaven, Christ does. But as it says, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." And if we expect Christ to save us, we must be willing to do what we can to help others. Matthew 25:31-46 elaborates a bit more on the necessity of doing those good deeds.

Donate time, money, or items to charity
Help an old lady across the street
Volunteer at a homeless shelter - or with any other charitable organization
Raise money for breast cancer or leukemia - walk-a-thon, 5K marathon, etc...
Become a Big Brother/Big Sister
Just give of yourself. It's not an "either/or" thing. You can have faith AND do good works.

THE way in which Christ said people would know they were His followers was by the LOVE that they showed to others. A person who loves is fulfilling the commands of Christ (no matter what religion or lack thereof). If their actions are evil then no matter what they profess they believe they are obviously faking believing in the message of Christ. (Matt 7:21-23)
