France: the 5th republic?

Hello.

Contemporary history tells us that France is living its fifth republic age.

Can anybody help? : I need to know which political or social conditions must exist to consider the falling of a republic and the birth of another one.

I live in Mexico and I wonder if that term also appliesfor another countries (like mine) or just a colloquial expression used in France. Books of history of Mexico says nothing about the theme.

Thank you very much for your advice and help.

The French republics are numbered based on changes in the constitution or major changes in the way the country is governed. France as a country has been in continuous existence, in some form, for more than a thousand years.

The First Republic was the one that was created during the French Revolution, and ended when Napoleon became Emperor.

The Second Republic was formed after Louis Phillippe was deposed in 1848. It ended when Napoleon III was crowned to former the Second Empire.

The Third Republic formed in 1870, after the fall of the Second Empire.

The Fourth Republic was basically a re-creation of the Third, after World War II. It came to an end during the Algerian Crisis of 1958 that brought Charles de Gaulle back to power. It was acknowledged that there were major problems with the government and de Gaulle was charged with making reforms.

The Fifth, and current, French Republic was the one that was formed when de Gaulle and his supporters enacted a new constitution for the country that made major changes to the Third/Fourth Republic versions, reforming the parliamentary system and also strengthening the executive branch. It's one of the best semi-presidential republican systems in the world.

Mexico could probably number its republics and empires in a similar manner. It just chooses not to mark eras in this way.
