Can You Discern The Deeper Meaning in This Poem?

Quondam Catulus Que Futurus

(Once and Future Kitten)

He showed the semblance of a Caesar

Even as a little cat:

A noble, cunning warrior;

A willful autocrat.

He promised to fight battles

In which the fur would fly.

He expected to woo maidens

With a caterwauling cry.

He would create an empire

If left up to his tricks,

But then the would-be emperor

Discovered he'd been fixed.

Update:

Although not comparable to Robert Burns' "The best laid schemes of mice and men/ Go often awry,"(subtext: please compare this to a great poem), this poem describes how supposed destiny can be thwarted by fate. (My little ditties like it when I pontificate on them -- makes them feel important.)

The unwritten stanza is the result of this change in destiny, which you all filled in beautifully and differently. And, in CW's case, literally.

Update 2:

Ceaseless: excellent interpretation with a specific meaning.

Update 3:

Doe: loved the wordplay between "mane" and "name." And Catsonova is a fabulous name for a cat.

Update 4:

Lapiz: still laughing.

Update 5:

Pope, Day.vid: I will accept brilliant.

Update 6:

Fredric, J, Denise: Yes, indeed.

Update 7:

MTR: Cats, fixed or not, are always up for a nap.

Update 8:

P'Quaint: Loved your suggestion. Of course, herein, a crucial descriptor of character is "noble," which I would not apply to terrorists, although I am sure they would apply it to themselves.

Update 9:

Cassie: I hope he finds other outlets for his passions.

Update 10:

Phillip K: I wonder, too, which makes me uncomfortable at playing God with nature.

Update 11:

Gene: I love the paths this poem took you to. You can always play in my litter box.

Update 12:

CW: I like your addendum that he came out cocky as ever.

I guess, I'd say it means something like this. He had so many expectations, but someone interfered and he has nothing he thought he would. Basically that your future is never solid, anyone or anything can change it. Does that sound right?

Source(s): I hope there's actually a deeper meaning and you're not just seeing what us crazy poets can come up with. :P

Nice poem,. I like it and bravo for composing it.

    A TD?

    Perhaps he cannot "duck".

The synopsis of the duck philosophy is that Scrooge and Donald were incredibly entertaining.

    I loved Walt Disney comics.

    Edit:

    Awww..... Poor marbles.

Castration put paid to all his future dreams. A very clever piece of writing Adeline. Well done. A poem which was thought provoking on many levels, particularly in a political setting.

His dreams and hopes made him happy and gave him a future to look forward to. Then when he realized there would be no heir to carry on his mane he felt small defeated and usless. Not so my little Catsonova there is a purrrfect pussy waiting to be loved by you and thankful for nothing else.

An amusing, engaging and playful poem

(rather like kittens) that led me, depth-wise to perhaps

Samson and Delilah.(not a purrfect fit, I admit).

"Caterwauling cry" took me to "Bride of Frankenstein"

    and Elsa Lanchester's wrenching performance.

    An enjoyable, diverting read.

    Just a litter-box of a fun poem.

It's sounds like a contemporary meaning, like current presidents who make ample promises and get cuddly with their constituents to get elected. Then once in office they discover that their office is under control with threats, and all their promises get axed.

I often wonder what it does to their psyches, cats and dogs, males and females - when they get 'fixed'.

He still has a life I hope.

    Perhaps he could be Pope.
