Computer not seeing ram? Other issues?

So my system has been acting up lately, I've had several blue screen events. I'm pretty sure it's not a virus, ran several scans with several anti-virus programs.

When it crashed, I opened the case and there was an error code that indicated a problem with the ram in slot 2. I have 4 slots of dual chanel ram, so I removed the pair or ram sticks, slot #2 & #4 This may have fixed the problem, too soon to tell.

Here's where it gets weird. What I have in there is 2 sticks of DDR3 16 GB each for a total of 32GB. (I had 64). But when I go to computer/ system, it only shows 8GB of ram? How is that possible with 2 16GB sticks? Also, now my computer is noticeably faster since removing the suspect sticks, and I ran 'windows experience' and it went up to 6.7 lowest score from 6.4.

And, I'm running an SSD which was almost at capacity and suddenly is now half full?

WTF?

Thanks in advance.

Update:

No, the configuration is correct, the pairs are 1&3 and 2&4. They're color coded and I checked the manual.

Yes, my MB can support 16G / slot. I've had this setup for over a year and it always read 64GB before.

I have Windows 7 pro. It's a sweet system, I get 7.6 windows experience in all categories except graphics at 6.7, which is fine because I don't game on it.

your slots are fine what you lack to realise does your motherboard support 16gb in those slots judging by the systems reaction i seriously doubt it

your system most likely can only exept 4gb in each slot or 8gb in each slot max

if your motherboard supports 32 gb it would be reconising at the very least 16gb which makes me believe your machine is capped to 16gb max

    4gb

    4gb

    4gb

    4gb

since you havent listed the motherboard name this is best i could say and im probly accurate

however if you have ram in slots 1 and 2 and there both say 2gb and you have 16gb in the other slots it could be your motherboards max memory is 8gb that it can read

Wouldn't you need to remove ram in pairs? #1 and #2 should have sticks in them, while 3 and 4 will not. This is why you are getting incorrect readings. Your PC is only seeing one stick currently.

What OS are you using, Depending on the flavor, 8 is all they will address. Sometimes they will list the extra but not use it ( and sometimes run the slower for it). I'm guessing you have an OEM windows 7 Os.
