Do I have to re-apply for Social Security if I move to a different state?
I love in Michigan now. I am contemplating moving to Arizona. I am permanently disabled. I collect Social Security because of this. (I am not to retirement age yet.) My question: I applied for and was appproved for SSI in Michigan. If I move to Arizona do I have to re-apply for my SSI benefits? I don't know if it's controlled by the state government or federal gov. I don't know if it matters what state I live in. Can anyone give me answers? Thanks

Its federal, not state. So no you won't reapply unless your disability changes. You do need to notify them.

SSI isn't a state benefit - it is federal. Which means that you can live anywhere you want in the US. Same thing with social security benefits. So which is it you receive? SSI or social security? Two vastly different programs. The rules and regulations and benefit amounts are the same throughout the US because it is federal. Your benefits won't stop because you're moving.
SSI is the federal WELFARE program for people of limited income and resources who are blind, disabled or aged. The highest benefit is $710 a month and benefits are due on the 1st day of each month. Social Security benefit amounts are based upon what you've paid into the social security system; you receive social security if you've worked and paid social security taxes long enough. Benefits can be paid to spouses and children. Social Security benefits are paid on either the 3rd of the month or on a Wednesday determined by the day of your birth.
Even if you have direct deposit you are required by law to report a change in your residence address under both programs.

I really don't know you just gotta let ssi kno you're moving and I'm sure they can just transfer it to whereever you move to, but I'd like to know this myself...doesn't seem right that you would have to re apply since you already applied and were approved.
