American Atheists: How do you feel about your religious political figures?

I've noted that many of you Atheists are very active in the Politics section as well, so I wanted to hear your opinion on the fact that the vast majority of the political figures that you support are religious.

You spend all day in R&S mocking religious people, but you seem so excited about supporting religious people in politics.

According to a poll conducted among the 111th Congress (2009-2011) only 5 called themselves "unspecified/don't know/refused to answer." That's 0.9% of Congress.

If we add in the non-Christians and Jews (you know the ones that you like to malign the most), we're only up to a total of 12. That's 2.2% of Congress. That number is including the Muslims.

Let's be really generous and include the "Pietists, Friends/Quakers, and the Protestant - Unspecified" in case some Atheists were too ashamed to call themselves such and presented to be part of those groups. That brings us to a total of 53. So now we have 9.9% of Congress.

The only conclusion that can be reached is that the vast majority of you not only voted for, but also supported political candidates that were Christians or Jews of some form. And you did that while openly mocking religion and calling any person believing such things stupid/insane/deluded.

What does that say about the consistency of your position?

Update:
Update 2:

Let me get this straight...

I've gotten three answers so far from people saying that they're fine with it.

You're fine with supporting someone that follows a system that is "dumb/insane/deluded/evil?"

You're going to put a person that follows such a thing in a position of authority to make decisions that change your life?

That seems a little crazy to me.

Update 3:

@Daniel - you really do seem to be more reasonable than a lot of people in this section. I understand your point.

However, I have to ask, is it worth it to you to support someone that sacrifices their convictions and lies about believing something in order to gain power?

@Cason - If you really hold to that, then I admire your resolution.

Just to be clear though, you're saying you always vote for Atheists? That's a litmus test that must be met for someone to earn your vote? If not, then you're not following the principle you're stating.

Update 4:

@Fanged Disaster - "talking to" someone is a lot different from selecting them to be in a position of authority and to make decisions that change your life.

We live in a society where there's still a social stigma attached to a person who accepts the label of "Atheist." I believe many of the politicians profess beliefbelief for political-correctness and acceptance. There's no way an atheistic presidental candidate could win at this point so they claim to be believers because that's what sells. I don't think Obama has the faith that he expresses but he can't reveal that. Most people in America are Christian and would gasp at the idea of a president who doesn't believe in God.

The majority of US politicians profess religion. Given the rate at which many other of their promises don't turn out to have been true, one cannot then take such professions at face value.

There is also the fallacy of attempting to use societal statistics on a group of under a thousand people. So, your claim failed right there.

And, a moderately religious politician is far less Bad than an evangelical nutbag.

Or they voted for someone else and that person did not win.. You do realize there are more people who vote religiously and only about 37% of the population in all would actually vote for an atheist representative. We are the actual oppressed ones in this country so yeah. and to your first question: I hate it.

Are you basing your innovations-set in the direction of American Atheists on the atheists which you meet on line, or atheists which you recognize in my opinion? Frankly, i'm lots greater serious of religion and non secular human beings on line than i'm in real life. no longer by using fact i'm a coward who's afraid to bash human beings and mock their ideals in guy or woman - i'm incredibly able to that, if provoked - yet by using fact i flow to places on line that have been designed for the grievance and thinking of non secular faith. In everyday life, this is no longer suitable to flow around harassing others and troublesome their non secular ideals. although, in case you flow to a non secular communicate board on line, come arranged to be challenged. I definitely have lots of Christian friends, and maximum people who understand me could in no way dream to think of that i could be an atheist. I do exactly no longer care sufficient to approach the region. If somebody asks, I tell them, yet relatively i do no longer communicate approximately it lots off-line. or possibly you're good. If American Atheists are worse, this is by using fact eu atheists have in no way had to handle American Christians.

Wait, aren't most politicians liars and thieves? I am not talking about political parties, I am talking about politicians in general. Aren't most politicians also hypocrites as well?

Hmmm, and you claim that most of them follow Judo-Christian faith.

If I didn't know any better, I would say that maybe this explains why they do such things.

I don't care if someone is religious as long as they don't harm society. BTW: You don't have to like everything someone stands for you to like them.

As long as they do their job well, I don't mind.

@ Yun They don't shove it down anyone's throat, do they? Or do you suppose I should refuse to speak to Christian salesmen, barmen, scientists, writers or old ladies just because they're not atheists?
