is this the correct O2 sensor for my 2004 impala?
I failed the emission test the other day and the code that came up was "p0171 system too lean bank 1". From googling around, my guess is I need an 02 sensor. I found one one advance auto parts. Here is the link: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores...

I think you're on the right track. Don't waste your money on a cheap brand though, I've had good luck with the Bosch sensors that NAPA sells.

this is the O2 sensor closest to the top, till now the cat. in specific circumstances it will be related to the cat yet returned, closer to the top. O2 sensors do fail by means of warmth on the wires or injury from dropping issues on them or the wires rubbing on something. because of the fact it particularly is a circuit malfunction, it would be risk-free to interchange the O2 sensor if no longer the rest looks broken.
