Liberals: do you agree with this quote from Ben Franklin?
"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security." -Ben Franklin
Joe,
"We guys?" I'm sorry but who are "we guys?" As usual, Joe, your attempt at argumentum ad hominem FAILS.
ROFL!
I love this! Every liberal answering this question is attempting to go after the Patriot Act (which had constitutional problems admittedly) but they can't see that THEY are the ones willing to give up liberty when it comes to speech (hate speech legislation/political correctness), submit to unreasonable search and seizure (implemented by the TSA), and give up their right to keep and bear arms as outlined under the second amendment. Liberals truly have NO IDEA that they're all for giving up liberty in the name of security!
Sadcat,
That's one of the stupidest answers I've ever seen. Essential liberties are those outlined in the Consitution, particularly in the bill of rights. They include the right to life (note how liberals oppose this one too, at least when it comes to the unborn), the right to liberty (only, a liberal thinks, when a Republican president is in charge), and the right to the pursuit of happiness (but only if, after creating a business, one turns all his earnings over to uncle sam). Do you see now how hypocritical the left is?

To the left wing ranters who decided to Tell some lies to insult the asker really need to learn a lot of history. First the president doesn't make laws (except Obama, he believes that EO's have the force of law) I personally recognized that the original Patriot Act was a Pandora's box that could be abused. Obama, who didnt like a Republican president having that much power, hated it. Now the Democratics and Obama have put the original BAD law on steroids and now love the dictatorial power in the hands of a Democratic president.

Yup. It was your guy who started all this **** with the Patriot act. Obama is no better though. So yeah, stop this divisive bullshit and let's start fighting the real enemy, corporate influence in our politics and politicians who are reluctant to relinquish any power they've claimed for themselves. After we do that we can keep fighting with each other because at least a politics will be honest.... ok, at least they'll be more honest.
The assumptions you make. They're really kind of cute. There are plenty of people willing to defend the 2nd amendment, but how many people in govt. have spoken out against the Patriot act? Almost none, certainly not the same amount that are opposing any additional regulation of firearms. Political correctness is not mandated by any kind of governmental authority, it's more or less social pressure to not be a ********, or at least keep it under wraps if you are one. So yeah, not a law. Hate speech isn't law either, otherwise the Westboro Baptist Church would be in cells. Unreasonable search and seizure is the ENTIRE issue with the Patriot act. Focusing on the TSA is complaining about stubbing your toe when someone just cut off your arm.

I prefer "it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, then to speak and remove all doubt" Abraham Lincoln.
Liberty and security are mental constructs that do not exist in reality. You imagine you have them, then you imagine they are being taken away. FYI, liberals are not offering to give up any "essential liberty" that is simply another connie delusion.
The constitution does not include the rights of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness", try reading it some times instead of misquoting dead guys.

i haven't study the different solutions - needed to grant you an unpolluted answer first.. i could upload an edit later. some thing constructive approximately Barack Obama: the guy is a superb speech-maker. If John McCain were as proficient a speaker as is Barack Obama, John McCain could nicely be President today. he's a splash weaker on "off-the-cuff" feedback, yet after 8 years with George W. Bush's speech impediment, even Obama's susceptible spot seems sturdy.

I don't agree with it, because Ben Franklin lived in a different time. He didn't live in a time with terrorists that highjack planes, nor did he live in a time where people shoot up elementary schools.
Also, it depends on what Franklin means with "an essential liberty". If he's talking about our constitutional rights, than I would agree with him. If he's referring to beefing up airport security, then I might not agree with that quote.

Yes, and that's why I opposed the Republican/Bush bill known as the Patriot Act.

Great. No more TSA. Let the terrorists bring any and all weapons on airplanes. It's an essential liberty.
See how easy it is to make that very general quotation apply to almost anything?
Edit: notice how, in response to my answer, you had to expend several hundred words defining "essential liberties"?
That's exactly my point. By itself. The quote is completely ambiguous. Therefore, asking us whether we agree with it is pointless

Yes But why is your question addressed to Liberals
Edit
hahahhahahahaha
I love it
You accuse Sadcat of making a stupid comment and then to prove your point you cite the wrong document ..

Great argument against Patriot Act when Bush passed it and you guys were all for it, and calling anybody who disagreed a traitor and coward.
- Anonymous8 years ago
yes I do, and I would like to add to that.
"they who would give up liberty ofr saftey not only deserve neither, but don't know what either entails. b/c you can't truly have one w/o the other.
