Why do my parents pay twice as much for water rates then me despite paying the same amount of Council Tax?

I understand that Water Rates are based on rateable value which was set pre 1990's and can no longer be changed. However, it seems grossly unfair that my mum and dad live in a flat worth less than £100k and they almost pay twice as much in water rates as we do in a bunglalow with a slightly higher value. Both properties are Band B Council Tax but in different council areas. My annual bill is £249 and theirs £488. The water companies website seems to suggest there is nothing you can do about it (except have a water meter fitted though the usage calculator says that would cost more). Does anyone know if parents are stuck with it or is there something they might try?

Some companies do charge more than others, even for the same rateable value or cubic metres used.

eg Anglian & South-west water are among the most expensive.

Telephone their water company and ask if there is an alternative tariff based on type of property.

Brother in law (Yorkshiore water) wanted a meter, but they couldn't find the supply pipe (!).

was advised if he wanted a meter he would have to pay to get highway fenced off while works took place.

Rateable value 450, predicted meter 200.

He was offered a 3bed semi rate (300-ish) instead to avoid digging up even more of the garden & public highway.

It is unlikely that a water meter will cost more that what they are already paying, especially as they are just two people. They can be counter productive if you are a growing family.

You may well already be on a water meter anyway.

Some water companies, before the compulsory ones are phased in over the next few years offer you a water meter and the chance to swap back in year if you have not saved money.

But they are something we are all going to have to accept so they may as well have one installed now.

You are in different council areas. Both properties may be band B- BUT different councils charge different cash rates for a band B. And the water people charge a percentage of the actual £ rates. Your parents should consider asking for a water meter. If the usage calculator sayss its going to be more then I have to say that YOU are getting a bargain and perhaps that is where the unfairness lies....

Well if as you suggest their water would cost more if they put a meter in, they should count their blessings and keep shtum because they're already paying less than they could be.

The difference might be because of the area where your parents live. This is in addition to there being 2 people in one house as opposed to one in the other house.

Water meters do not cost more. I have saved £200 a year by having one. They only pay for what they use.
