How does payment work when selling on eBay?
I recently sold an item on eBay, and have gotten an email from eBay and payPal, but have not received any actual payment in my payPal account. My eBay account says the payment has been received, and also my PayPal account name is not the same as my eBay username, not sure if this matters or not. This is my first time selling on eBay so not sure if the payment takes a day or two to process, but wondering if there is an answer to this.

Here's how things work after a buyer has won/committed to buy your eBay item:
1. Buyer pays you via PayPal. The buyer will then pay for the item via PayPal.
2. Provided that you correctly linked your PayPal account (that means giving eBay the correct PayPal e-mail address or linking the correct account via sign-in), you will receive your funds through the PayPal Balance.
3. You will probably want to get shipping through eBay's shipping tools (unless you specified your own shipping method.)
4. If you used eBay to print a label and ship your item, you will receive your funds on PayPal in a matter of a day or to or instantly, depending on several factors. If you did not, however, it can take up to 23 days to receive your payment on your PayPal account.
You should take care to ship the item as soon as possible after you are notified that your buyer has paid for the item. If you decide to wait until the money from PayPal to go to your actual Bank Account, you will need to notify your buyer through the listing that the shipping & handling time is 3~7 business days, which can repel potential buyers (as they don't want to wait that long.)

Tsui answered your question. I would like just to add, that if it's your first sell on ebay, you money will be not available immediately. Ebay expects you to have a history of sales during first 45-90 days.
So paypal may be holding your payment and expecting you to ship the item from your own expense.
If the buyer leave you a positive feedback, money should be available immediately after this.
Good Luck.
