Why is everyone so excited about the new Pope?

because it's something to talk about, and according to one of those loud and annoying christians with a microphone and an unhealthy habit for over-analysis, this one's supposed to be the anti-christ.

that's right, kids, the anti-christ isn't going to be a strong, healthy, youthful and charismatic lord of destruction... it's a feeble old man with one working lung who was at the unpopular end of the scale for his work in argentina, with about a five-ten year lifespan.

still, credit due to the new guy, he has slightly bigger cherries than the last few popes: he doesn't drive around in the bullet-proof glass pope-cage. I give him props for that.He's either brave, over-confident or just fiercely aware of his lifespan.

but I do have to agree with an early answer: it's the same reason people talk about kim kardashian.

The media always does this with the new pope. I honestly don't care if people are excited about the pope or not. He doesn't affect my life anymore.

Because he is such a great figurehead for the Catholic church. He presents the image of austerity while the Cardinals and Bishops are robbing people blind.
