Why has no one ever created a tub disposal?

Serious question. I just happened to be thinking why like the garbage disposal for a kitchen sink that clears the drain of whatever food particles and oil get trapped in it, has no one ever created something like that for tubs so that they don't get clogged? If you have a system that gets easily clogged, you have to constantly either use a plunger or something like Drano or Liquid Plumber to unclog them. Things that make you (or at least me) go, hmm.

The reason? Ask yourself this: Do you want to be standing in a tub of water connected to something electric that could short out? Hmmm? Even something as simple as a bad ground and you could be spending your last days - well, at the very least, clean.

    Hope this helps.

Hey friend, interesting concept! Here are the reasons why it isn't done:

-the physical space needed below the drain to attach it. Not enough room if located on 2nd floor or above, (it would stick out of the ceiling) and if on the 1st floor people would probably be walking into it when in the basement..

-cost- to purchase, install, run power to it.

    To avoid blockages:

-keeping a strainer attached to, or over the drain, and cleaning it will keep most hair and bigger things out, and they are the primary blockage causers.

-a properly installed drain system won't clog very easily. Most of that type of problem is caused by improper installation, found on most old homes and even new ones. Usually it's insufficient slope of drain pipes, allowing a build up of crud.

I installed a shower and a tub/shower in my home 30 years ago (I'm a licensed home imp. contractor), and I have never had the drains clog up.

A side note- Do NOT use caustic chemicals to clear a plugged drain. I have had to replace drain traps and even cast iron drain pipes due to the cleaners eating away at the pipes. Whenever I find leaking metal drain pipe, I ask if they use chemical drain cleaners, and the reply is always yes.

I like your thinking out of the box- keep it up, you will hit a home run with an idea soon I'm sure!

Plenty of people use their garbage disposals like a trash can, and shove way more food down there then they are really designed to handle (and they do clog up). In the shower, it's really just stray hairs that cause problems, and can easily be remedied by putting a $2 strainer over the drain and throwing said hairs in the trash after you shower. Hopefully, you aren't trying to put anything else down the shower drain. It is simply more profitable for companies to keep designing better garbage disposals and other products people will get more use out of, than something that will serve one, wholly unnecessary purpose.

Source(s): My hair is long enough I can sit on it, and it's thick, so a good amount comes out in the shower. I have never had an issue with my hair clogging the drain, but I put the little strainer over it.

well first realize that the garbage disposal isnt meant for cleaning your refrigerator out. if you dump grease and heavy amounts of food down your drain, its going to plug no matter what.

now, its not needed in a tub, just fish out the hair clog.

HaHa - - - - - I think Cramer tried that in a Seinfeld episode because he was cleaning vegetables while showering.

Kinda gross to think that anyone would have anything in a bathtub that requires mascerating......yuck.

and you would repair it how? if no cellar and you just have a pad, you would be in a major destruction/construction zone.
