Other ways to say 'x looked'?

Other ways to say 'he looked' or 'she looked'? I'm writing a story, and I don't like having to replicate this over and over again..

Update:

As in he or she looked confused, scared etc. Not like she stared, gazed etc. My bad. I should of phrased that better.

Don't find another way to say "he looked [trait]" because that's filtering.

I think of filtering as a person who can see a movie describing it to a friend on the phone. Filtering tells your reader (or your friend on the phone) what senses the character used to get sensory input. Filtering words include looked, saw, felt, heard, etc.

Instead of "she looked scared," describe the aspects of her facial expression and body stance which make other people know she's scared. "She trembled in place without looking Mr. Smith in the face, but she held her ground." or "Her fingers twisted in ever-changing knots, and her top teeth sawed at her bottom lip."
