Are Atheists welcome in Texas?

I'm considering moving from Connecticut to Dallas and I'm wondering if I would need to hide the fact that I'm an Atheist. Nobody around here cares if you are religious or not, but is Dallas different?

Because I know that it is more socially conservative in the South, and I have no idea what to expect.

You can be an atheist in Texas. Nobody is going to care about your religion or lack of religion. There's a sign at the state line that says, Welcome to Texas. It doesn't say, no atheists allowed. I'm a Texan and live in the Dallas area.

They talked about that in Atheist Experience once. They were confronted with the question of why atheists are living in the bible belt of America. They explained fairly well, that they are actually living in Austin and Austin is not as religious as it is expected from a place inside of the bible belt and they can live quiet lives there with the fact that they are atheists out in the open. Even doing a world wide show from there.

On the other hand, they specifically mentioned how Austin isn't like the rest of Texas, so, that's kind of a bad sign for Dallas. But I can't tell you anything more specific about it, since I've never been there. Haven't ever been in the US either.

There are plenty of atheists in Texas.

I live in Austin where one of the first 'atheist' organizations in the country started, and the national convention "American Atheists" is going to be held here in a few weeks. Dallas is conservative in general, but, like any large city you shouldn't run into too many problems.

If I lived in Lubbock or Amarillo... I might be a little less positive about being an atheist in Texas.

Dallas is a big, and I mean BIG city -- Bigger than Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport combined -- and doesn't really represent the cultural make-up of Texas. Howevre, outside the northeast, you pretty much have to hide the fact you're atheist anywhere.

However, considering the move to Dallas from CT, there are other things to take into consideration besides religion -- the politics, the economic climate, and the weather climate -- hot and sticky and lots of big nasty bugs. Tornadoes. Armadillos. All that stuff.

Might do better in Austin than the Dallas/Fort Worth area but DFW not too bad. There are lots of people who are very strong into religion in the area and would be a problem but that is probably the same anywhere. My suggestion is to scan Meetup.com to see if you can find any athiest Meetup groups in that area. Maybe contact some people in those groups and ask some questions. See what you can learn.

No. Not in Dallas. If you are in small towns then people would probably not like it but Dallas is a diverse and modern city. Of course, there are Christians in Dallas but they are not going to scorn you if you aren't Christian the way some rednecks from nowhereville night.

From what my friends in the States tell me, it's okay in the large cities like Dallas.

Yes, but I suggest staying in the city. Although, even in Dallas, there's some animosity.

Texas is unwelcoming to all attentionwhores. So if you're one of those atheists who has to tell everyone just how better they are than everyone for being atheist or who has a pathological compulsion to insult people's religions, no, you will not be welcome.

If you're comfortable in your non-faith and respectful, you will be fine, even in rural areas.

Honestly, most real Texans (as opposed to west coast carpetbaggers) don't give a damn what you are as long as you're friendly and decent. No aloof, detached yankees will ever feel at home here, even in Austin.
