Skyrim V elder scrolls question....?

Ok, so I have been recently thinking about investing in either an xbox 36o or PS3, and I have never played a skyrim and or elder scrolls game, but I recently researched Skyrim elder scrolls V and it looks pretty sick!!

Question though, I have never played any of this series, am I able to pick up with elder scrolls V or do I have to play from the beginning??

All TES games have a rich backdrop of (mostly) consistent lore, and while some hardcore nerds will tell you that you don't know jack until you've tried Morrowind, it really isn't necessary. Skyrim stands just fine on its own, and while the story and characters are perhaps a little thin compared to TES III and IV, but the world is much, much prettier to look at, and there is still a ridiculous amount of stuff to do. Also, Bethesda Studios has been having a terrible time releasing patches and DLC for the PS3, so if you are in the market for Skyrim and things like it, I would recommend getting an XB360 instead.

It would be great if you did play an earlier game but it is not nearly required. In all the games you play as a different character and the games themselves are separated by centuries and provinces in the lore. As in Marrowind takes place in the province of Marrowind, and Skyrim takes place in the Province of Skyrim, they are all in the continent of Tamriel however.

You won't need to play previous games, they are all great to play (I say Oblivion if you play any past games at all, Oblivion is generally regarded as better as Skyrim around the board. Remember that Skyrim is the only one in which you play as the Dragonborn or Dovahkiin however.

The most you will see in Skyrim is references to previous games (that's pretty much only the last couple of games however, Oblivion is the 4th in the series if you don't count any obscure side games).

It is very easy to pick up the lore of the game as you go along however, or at least what is going on in game at the time. Some references to things will sound familiar if you have played a previous game but it is explained and you understand it very quickly. Talos for example, play the game for a little, do a side-quest or two, listen to an NPC's random ramblings and you'll understand everything you need/want to know and more.

Overall, just play Skyrim, it's great and you won't need to play previous games, although if you do The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is recommended.

Play on the X-Box, the PS3 get's the DLC's ridiculously late and the DLC's are DEFIANTLY worth getting, seriously, don't underestimate them. You can get it for the PS3 because it was more recently released and the loading screen is a little shorter.

You'll understand lore easily weather you played previous games or not.

    ^-^ Hope this helps! ^-^

The only Elder Scrolls I have played is Oblivion and Skyrim. The first one I tried was oblivion with all the DLC, and I prefer that way over Skyrim. They're more their own stories in different countries. So no, you don't have to start at the beginning. I really want to play the first few but between oblivion and Skyrim, oblivion wins IMO. Do it!

You do not need to have played the other elder scrolls games to enjoy skyrim. I started with skyrim myself and found it very enjoyable, and I think it's even more of an experience when you're not familiar with the game. I would definitely recommend it and I hope you have lots of fun! Hope this helps :)

you can start playing with skyrim

but you would be remiss to skip over oblivion which is an excellent game in its own right

the elder scrolls games are mostly standalone and you can play them in any order

arena and daggerfall ( 1 and 2) are free to download from the official site

The Skyrim game starts up about a few centuries after oblivion, and it would be pretty hard to keep your mage, warrior or ect from the past game alive for more than a century. However, you do have to start over and choose your elf, argonian, or ect. I would choose the conjurer because you can summon beasts, weapons, and demons to Skyrim to fight for you. Xbox rules!!!

  • You do not have to play from the begining to play number 5 because in morrowind number 3 is aroung 500-1000 years before skyrim and oblivion #4 is 200 years before skyrim. skyrim is a totally different storyline than the rest anyway but in the dragonborn dlc for skyrim you get to go to morrowind but not all of morrowind.

No. You don't need to play the others to play Skyrim. It helps in understanding some of the backstory stuff, but that stuff isn't all that prevalent.
