Formula 1 - what's the advantage to the motorist these days?

As far as I can see, the 'sport' provides no feed back to the car makers. In the past, we had disc brakes, stop lights, seat belts, and tyre design. Where is automatic braking, and automatically dimmed stop lights at traffic lights, and seat belts that don't hinder your exit after an accident? What's the point of 'sticky' tyres for more grip in pot holed roads?

On the contrary, the "sport" provides plenty of feedback to manufacturers.

If it wasn`t for the "sport", we wouldn`t have sequential gearboxes, light, powerful, yet small capacity engines and other high-tech bits and pieces. Granted, most adaptations will only be seen in exotic or prestige class cars but we must take into account affordability for one thing. Slowly, advancements will find their way in more run of the mill passenger cars. Just look at most manufacturer`s auto gear boxes. Many of them have a sequential option on the selector.

safety is the main thing being campaigned for on the track by the legend that is Jackie Stewart and this has been replacted on our roads and they are also the breeding grounds for future technology as well as aero dynamics on road cars as in 10 years time youll be able to buy a car with kers on it imagine that on the motorway =)

if you want an example think of the tech involved in the mclaren f1 and the tech in a ferrari 430

or the tech in a early to mid 1990s fiesta to the model we have now in 2013

life as well as tech moves on

There is no advantage today except lessons in how to contain road rage on the podium.

Since computers were fitted to road cars I haven´t bought a new one because I cant mend it myself.

I think this is why classic cars are so popular.

Last time I checked, it was auto racing, not a science experiment to make road cars better.
