What do they test for in a pre-employment drug screen (specifically spice/k2)?
Specifically, is it standard for companies to test for spice? I used to smoke regularly but quit a week or so ago. I was just offered a job and need to complete a drug screen. I haven't done anything else (not even a drink) that I'm worried about. I know it's easier and more affordable to test for spice now than it was even a year ago so I'm more worried about whether or not they'll test for it on a pre-employment screen. I really need this job so I'll be very frustrated at myself if I lose it over something I'm not even doing anymore. Is a test for spice standard now? Or is it still a test the employer has to specifically ask for in addition to a normal drug screen?

Every employer and lab decides what to test for to achieve the employer's goal. Generally, drug tests are done in "panels" where each panel is a drug tested. Most range from 5 to 13. Another variable is testing sample such as urine, saliva, or hair. Each sample can test for specific substances within a specific time frame.
Traditionally, spice/k2 is not a tested substance, but it can be tested if requested. You're probably not going to be told this information ahead of time.

A test for THC is standard. If you are a regular marijuana smoker, it takes 30 days to get it out of your system, no matter how many remedies people offer you.
They will test for 10 chemicals in your urine, blood, and/or saliva. A "10-panel urine screen" consists of the following: 1. Amphetamines (including Methamphetamine) 2. Barbiturates 3. Benzodiazepines 4. Cannabinoids (THC) 5. Cocaine 6. Methadone 7. Methaqualone 8. Opiates (Codeine,Morphine, Heroin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, etc.) 9. Phencyclidine (PCP) 10. Propoxyphene

Generally they do the 5 panel urine test that covers narcotics, benzodiazepines, opiates, THC, amphetamines and on occasion alcohol. Depending on the nature of the job, how much it pays etc., the companies reputation, will depend on the extent of the test. Drug tests are expensive, particularly if they started asking the laboratories to test for every specific spice available that mimics the effects of marijuana.

A five panel drug test will reveal the following: cocaine, amphetamine (including meth), opiates, THC, and phencyclidine (pcp). It will not pick up on Spice because spice does not have THC in it like real marijuana does.
