Is the Right turning towards gay marriage?

I am a Conservative, most of the time, and I believe I have changed my mind on Gay Marriage. I know! Can you believe it?! I simply opposed only the WORD marriage. But hey, if Chick-Filet (a Christian organization, also closed on Sundays) and Bill O'Reilly can evolve, well, I must be wrong. So to my Lib friends, forgive me that I have taken so long to evolve, but you now have my vote. See? People evolve, just like the Civil Rights Movement. Please don't anyone be smart and say..."hey, you want a medal?" I simply wanted to share. Anyone else evolve today on Good Friday?

Update:

Luvs My Gun, big jump there buddy, HUGE..and um, not true.

Update 2:

#2 To Luvs My Gun: Formerly, I felt that, no matter what the dictionaries say today, marriage has and is, since Biblical times, solely between a man and a woman. You jumped to I felt that "it could mean anything." I did not.

I've said all along that there are those on the right and left who are for and against it, the same with abortion, gun control, and many other things, why is this such a hard concept for people?

My sense (and I mean no disrespect to you or anyone else) is that opposition to gay marriage is generally either a result of a religious objection to homosexuality, or a sense among a lot of (mostly older) people that homosexuality is 'weird'.

I think that for the culture as a whole the fact that some people are gay has become a much more accepted and normal part of life, and since there really isn't any compelling 'civilization will collapse' argument against letting gay people get married, over time more and more voters have become comfortable with the idea and no longer oppose it.

I think that there will remain a large number of religious voters (who tend to vote Republican) who will continue to oppose gay marriage, but the culture as a whole is eventually going to accept it. And the people who run the Republican party realize that this means that gay marriage is no longer going to be a useful issue for them: instead of allowing them to protect 'family values' that most people agree with, opposition to gay marraige is just going to make Republicans look old fashioned and mean spirited.

I very much doubt that Republicans are going to come out in favor of gay marraige (no pun intended) but I don't think that they'll want to emphasize the issue in the future like they have in the past.

"I simply opposed only the WORD marriage. "

so i guess now you think the meaning of the word marriage is arbitrary, and can mean anything at anytime then.

if that is the case than the word actually has no meaning.

EDIT- big jump, and not true?

so please explain it to me?

if you don't think the meaning of the word can be changed how can you expand it to include new people?

JAMES- what benefits do gays get that can be taken away?

EDIT- " You jumped to I felt that "it could mean anything." I did not."

    no i did not.

you came up with a new arbitrary definition to include same sex marriage. you new definition is no more arbitrary than any definition that excludes gays, or includes polygamy.

now since you came up with a new definition yes you felt you could change the word to anything....in this can you changed it to include gays. you could have just as easily change it to include polygamy, or bestiality.

Good to hear that. There is nothing wrong with evolving unless you do it the way Mitten did.

Anyone else evolve today on Good Friday?

    Yes....me.

Cons have convinced me that banning assault rifles makes no sense but I still believe we should get rid of 100 and 50 round magazines. They still haven't convinced me that the ban is unconstitutional though.

    P.S.

I actually see a lot of progress in GOP recently. They are truly taking steps to reform their party ideas and change the image.

  • Only on the appearance level, don't worry as soon as they have at least 1/2 the gay/lesbian vote they will do another 180 and end all gay/lesbian benefits and marriages. This is what Republicans are most well known for.

Marriage restriction as a law in a country built on freedoms it never upholds.....makes sense doesn't it?

I hope they get more rights. Why would anyone think someones own personal choice should be illegal?
