Should I rent a car on my beach weekend in Phuket?

This will be my 4th time to Phuket. On my earlier trips I stayed in Patong near the action. I rented a scooter and visited several beaches to snorkel. However, on this trip I'm staying on the north side at a more remote resort and I'm not certain there are scooters available. I will be there for a long weekend Fri-Mon and plan to mainly swim and relax. But I thought maybe I'd get bored and want to explore further beaches in the area. Or other restaurants. But hey, it's only 2.5 days so maybe I should just chill 100% at the resort, and take a taxi from the airport. This would be the simplest solution. But I might want to go somewhere?

Help, I cannot make up my mind.

Traffic in Phuket can be crazy, so if you're only there for a few days, you probably want to skip the car rental and take taxis who know their way around. If you rent a car (or ride a scooter or motorcycle) be sure that your travel insurance specifically includes that, and that won't cover you if you've been drinking. (I know, but you'd be surprised what people do on vacation). Hope you have a great time snorkeling!

Taxi is incredibly expensive . Public transport is nearly non existence. Phuket has so many wonderful beaches, restaurants, clubs, etc. Without a car you are dependent on overpriced taxis. I live in Thailand since 10 years and on my trips to Phuket I use Mobile Car Rental . The cars are new, the staff is on time and reliable. Service was always perfect. They might not be the cheapest but they provide definitely the best value for money. www.mobilecarrent.com

Driving in Thailand is not a good idea particularly if you have an accident. Liability is very different to home and the driver who has most money is usually at fault. Check your travel insurance as most do not cover motorbikes. Have an accident on a motorbike and you could end up paying a fortune to get home. Use taxis.
