I have two questions about the phrase "gal friday"?

I have heard the term "gal friday," but I don't know what it means.

First, can someone tell me what it means or where and how I'm supposed to use the phrase; and secondly, can someone tell me how the phrase began, what the story behind it is...?

Thanks.

Comes from the book "Robinson Crusoe".

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson_Crusoe

Stranded on an island he finds a Native Person, also stranded, who became his #1 helper. Crusoe named him Friday.

A "Girl Friday" is the go-to person, like an executive secretary or personal aid, to do a lot of work and find ways to get things done. An indispensable assistant.
