I honestly don't call the rock music in the mainstream today "alternative". I really don't hear it but this could be because it all sounds generically the same to me. The whole Alternative x pop x indie type of combination. I mean, when I was in high school, I liked a few of those bands like Paramore, Muse (still like them but more of the older stuff), My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, and a few other ones but over time, I stopped listening to them frequently as I got a little tired of the quality of the sound. I will say I am heavily into 90s Alternative, college rock. Those are timeless for me and it's funny because I wasn't a teenager in the 90s yet, a lot of the bands I like today are from that time. Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, Curve, Hole, and many others. I actually find myself going backwards looking for new music to listen to instead of modern. Bad I know but I'm being honest lol.

However, there still are a few bands today that are keeping that "alternative" edge alive and well. The trick is that they are more underground or less known (since they aren't played on the radio). Yeah Yeah Yeahs & Die So Fluid are a few that comes to my head.

So yeah, my answer would be that it is dead in mainstream (you really can't call it alternative in my opinion) but it is still alive underground. You just have to look for it.

    I hate that term "alternative."

    it means nothing

anyone can be alternative. It's too broad of a spectrum to base any opinion on. It ranges from shitty bands like Fall out boys, to legendary bands like Radiohead. And those two sound nothing alike, but yet are both deemed alt. rock. The reason why it got its name (alt rock) was during the prime of MTV's golden years to distinguish from pop tunes on the radio, to college rock outfits making it pretty big, thus the term alternative was coined.

But the grand scope of things, modern rock is just as prevalently good as its predecessors, if not better. And i'm not talking about top 40 rock (this however does include mainstream rock that's outside the top 40) and college rock and etc are amazing.

It's hard to tell what 'Alternative' is today when the alternative is basically mainstream. Where's the alternative part?
