Advantages of the Ruger GP100 over the 686

    1) It has no lock in the frame

    2) the cylinder locks into the frame at three points instead of two

    3) It has no side plate. It's easier to disassemble, because the trigger assembly drops out of the bottom of the frame.

    4) It has a thicker top strap

    5) It's a more modern design

    6) the front sight is removable just by depressing a pin

    7) Owning a Ruger shows that you are bold enough to change with technology

but if your only concern is an action that resembles a Colt Python get the 686

Out of the box the 686 will have a better trigger. The Smith nor your Python (yes I have one of each) will take the abuse that the Ruger will take. I put a $40 reduced power spring kit in my Ruger. The trigger is now better than my Smith but still not as good as the Colt.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Both are excellent firearms.

Pick the one that fits your needs better. Frankly, I don't like the trigger on the GP100, but it's not so bad that I couldn't handle it.

Go handle both, dry fire the 686, and see what you prefer. The 686 is going to have a nicer trigger straight out of the box.

I actually own both. The gp100 is stronger and more reliable. The 686 looks a little cooler but if I had to go to war and defend my life life with one I would without a single doubt in my mind I would take the gp100 hands down for too many reasons to list.
