Is adding 2GB more RAM worth for me ?

Well , i have a Dell vostro 1014 laptop , Core 2 Duo 2.1 Ghz , 2 GB Ram.

i am currently using windows 7 64 bit along with ubuntu 64 bit.

it is said that if you want to get best out of a 64 bit OS , you must have at least 4GB of RAM .

with 2GB of RAM windows 7 64 bit feels slightly better than 32 bit , i can feel the increase in responsiveness of the system while i do multi-tasking. but ubuntu 64 bit feels a little slow.

So, if i add 2GB RAM will there be any real gain in the performance and why??

Dave is right and the other guy is wrong you won't see a "huge" performance increase...honestly you'll just be able to multitask more (that's if you have a bunch of programs open at the same time) I upgraded my computer from 1GB to 3GB and it wasn't faster, programs didn't open any faster, the speed at which programs open depend on the CPU, RAM allows you to multitask. I would personally upgrade to 4GB because 2GB is good it gets the job done but 4GB allows you to be a bit more comfortable. Go for it get the upgrade besides RAM is pretty cheap

I would suggest it, but that is because in my case Windows 7 uses about 1.3 GB of RAM just sitting idle. But what you really need to do is check and see how much RAM your computer is using. You may not need it.

Pull up Task Manager or use a different info program like Speccy and watch how much RAM is being used. If it's getting near 2GB then your computer is probably using the virtual drive for extra memory which will slow things down a lot.

Ram is cheap, but make sure whatever you upgrade to you get two chips so you can take advantage of the dual channel memory.

Isn't ubuntu a unix or linux platform? If one is not on a Mac, I can't imagine dumping ubuntu on a PC just to get a little more speed. I'm probably an idiot, but I can't imagine running a 64-bit ANYTHING without 8gigs of ram! Could just be that I run several creative memory-sucking apps all day long and your situation is entirely different.

I would recommend you removing ubuntu and let it run on windows 7 only, and yes if you want speed upgrade your ram, remember that ubuntu will be as slow as with the 4gb ram.

People who have limited knowledge of computers might tell you that. It isn't particularly true. If your PC is doing what you want and you are satisfied with it, there is no need to add more ram.

Edit: Win 7 only uses 1 gig by the way.

yes, there will. windows 7 takes up 2 gb RAM, so you have little else for any other program. RAM allows you to run more programs at once without slowing down. so you will see a huge boost in performance if you double your RAM.
