This project is doomed to fail. They will never raise the kind of money needed. Mars does not have the resources to fully supply the colonists, so they will have to receive supplies from Earth, forever, or as long as there are colonists.

Their funding plan is very flawed. They want to rely on reality TV that is focused around the colonization. Reality TV is a roll of dice - there is no way to predict what TV viewers will find entertaining, if you had sat down 5 years ago and said, "I've got this idea for a show that is going to be huge", and preceded to describe Honey Boo Boo, then I need you to sit down and pick me some lottery numbers. The cast of colonists will not be suited to television entertainment, the skills needed to survive successfully are the exact opposite of what is needed to make popular reality TV. Who wants to watch a group of intelligent, healthy people who all get along?

We're never going to colonize Mars, the cost is insanely high with no return on investment. I do think in the next 25 years we will see some small research outposts on the planet, similar to the way we study places like Antarctica.

Well, ..., I think it's entirely possible. There's been a lot of new information that's recently come to light that indicates Mars may be more habitable than we thought, especially, wrt radiation levels. On Oct 2014 there is a high probability that a comet will impact Mars. This could bring some much needed water and gases needed for kick-starting the greenhouse effect on Mars. After that event we may have a perfect opportunity (no pun intended) for sending a crew to Mars.

    I definitely think it'll happen.

The fact that a company plans on doing so only makes the possibility bigger that it'll happen, since it could mean competition if other companies see reason to do this, which would make it go faster.

I would definitely go if I were asked (I would try to get in the program (if possible) if I wasn't asked), even if it means I won't see my friends and family anymore. FOR SCIENCE!! :D no seriously, I'm interested enough in the research and space and change to actually go. And I could still stay in touch in other ways with friends and family anyway. Also, new people every 2 years (I thought it was every 4 years? Probably just me :3) makes it less lonely I guess.

Even if I couldn't go, I'd follow every step and dream of going one day ^^

    No it cant.

Keep this in prospective. Today its 2013, so your only talking 10 years from today.

I think the last moon trip was in 1972, and yet despite wanting to return we have not.

If after 40 years we cant get back to the Moon, there is zero chance of getting to mars.

I don't believe one iota of that mission. Even if they do get off the ground, chances are the people on board will suffer mental breakdowns and kill each other before the half-way point to Mars.

Mars colony??? Thats not impossible. It may be reality in about a hundred years. If it would really happen i wouldnt want to leave my sweet home and go to some hot and deserty planet.

I think it's possible, but I wouldn't want to spend rest of my life there... yet.

The technology is not an issue, if they can keep the radiation away.

I'm thinking China will be the only ones sending people to Mars, thanks to 0bama for destroying America.
