Lady Thatcher Public Funeral; A mistake? or simply a Media 'Event'?

Ted Heath; Private funeral. Sir Harald Wilson; private funeral. Lady Thatcher; Public Funeral and major Media Event. Would not a private dignified funeral for Lady Thatcher be a more appropriate and respectful internment for the former PM rather than the 'in their face' Public funeral that many opponents to Lady Thatcher's Political Agenda will certainly take the event to be? There is bound to be trouble with demonstrations, so why not have a private service where admirers, family and friends of Lady Thatcher can pay their respects?

I have heard rumours of around £8 million pounds of tax payers money will be used. Seems a bit obscene to me. A private funeral with invited guests from the Queen down would be a lot more respectful. You have a valid point in regards of the establishment rubbing peoples faces in it. She divided a country which is still divided today.

Edit:- I do not understand why you have to be left wing to hate Thatcher. Can someone please explain.

I think that a public funeral for Margaret Thatcher is the least that can be done. I would have gone all the way and arranged a state funeral.

Ted Heath presided over the three-day workweek and numerous strikes. Harold Wilson dodged around a lot and could not be trusted. Margaret Thatcher put the great back in Britain, revived the British economy in a big way, won the Falklands War and played a huge part in winning the Cold War.

If "they" whoever "they" are want a public funeral then the Conservative party or the Thatcher family should pick up the bill.

a mistake - divided britain will polarise even more and in todays poll 2 out of 3 people do not want it she divided the country forever and we are still divided so maybe in some ways better out than in - have a media spectacle adn dissent and see just how divided we still are.

She did not want a State funeral but it has been thrust upon her apparently.

    They should respect her wshes.

Incidentally, you have not mentioned Sir Winston Churchill who had a State funeral in 1965 which was observed with great respect.

she wanted one more go at beating the working class up and knew her funeral would bring out the protesters.

It is a great send off to her (and is why we hated the woman), for heads to be split open.

Its neither... its an opportunity to pay fitting tribute to her legacy. Thousands on the streets singing Ding Dong the witch is dead appropriate I think. :)

    Thatcher is dead....

    Thatherism is alive....

    Today we dance!

    Tomorrow we organise!

It is a media event which hopefully will backfire on the Conservatives and their ridiculous supporters

The Government pays for every ex-PM's funeral . Why the thumbs down? it's true

  • Margaret Thatcher was one of the most important figures in British politics and history in the past 100 years, wether you agree with her policies or not, she deserves a grand send off.

Source(s): I don't agree with most of her policies, though I know she made a big difference to what was a dying country in 1979.
