Idea's for a first car (23 years old)?
OK, so hoping to get my first car within the next month, recently turned 23 and been looking at some options but nothings totally decided.
I want something that I could pick up in good condition, Taxed, MOT'd and MOT passable standard for between £500-£1500-ish.
Also something that wont be too much to insure (£900-£1200-ish) so basically nothing more than 1.3 or 1.4 litre at most.
So far options are along the lines of...
1. Vauxhall Corsa (the car I learned in)
2. Renault Clio
3. Skoda Fabia
4. Citroen C3
5. Peugeot 106/206
6. Fiat Punto
Any other Ideas?
I have put these cars into quote sites such as go compare etc... and since I hit 23 (when I was 22 they were much higher) the insurance quotes have gone down, these values are based on annual payment rather than monthly though which lowers the cost by a lot as I will be paying it all up front, and most are 1.0-1.2 litre though 1.3-1.4 are just the highest i'm willing to look at, but I am looking at the 1.0-1.2 ones too.

Even at 23 you still have no experience to offer any insurance company and they will still hit you quite hard on the premiums. You may well have to drop your expected engine size down as well as the 1.3 and 1.4 will not help you in terms of cost.
You need to sit down and put some of these cars into search engines and see what insurance prices you can get and then adjust your car budget according to what you can afford overall.

Thing is, at that age and price, the 'best car' is the one in best condition.
It's no use thinking that a Skoda is going to be better than a Citroen because after 10 years all bets are off. Look at all these cars but concentrate on checking the service history, number of owners, whether it looks like it's been cared for or not, how it drives, MOT etc, and don't be swayed by some notion that one brand is any better than another.
That said, by the number of questions we get on here about them, a £1000 Peugeot is a brave purchase....
I'd add a Toyota Yaris to that list.

£500 gets you a smelly shed of a car
They paid people £2000 to scrap cars over 10 years old a few years ago so you ain't going to get much in that price bracket in the most sought after car class there is.
Insurance - even a small one could cost easily twice as much so make sure you get a quote before you commit to buy a particular car, you may be in for a shock

When I was 20 I had a 2002 1.6 Vauxhall astra, there only group 6 insurance if I remember rightly, it cost me £900 and about £1000 to insure, it wasnt too bad on fual as well

An answer all depends on what you want. Is image important. or would you be happy with any car?
If it's image then. you're going to get screwed n insurance.
If you just need a car and aren't bothered about image thenprevious shape. kia picanto or chevrolet spark. Check out what's available on the lower groups. Try Parkers
