How do I start to grow bamboo in a little indoor pot?

I've got a yard full of bamboo and I want to put a little shoot in an indoor pot, like the little ones they sell at grocery stores and farmers markets. How can I do this? What does inside the pot? It seems like they always have rocks at the top but I'm not sure if it's just rocks inside or if there is soil at the bottom.
