    It varied in the US. The states decided in different years beginning in the late 1700's and steadily progressed into the late 1900's. Laws still vary between the states, but most are similar regarding property ownership and divorce settlement.

  • In Scotland, 1880 (Law Reform, Husband and Wife Act). In England and Wales 1882 (Married Women's Property Act).

    Before that a woman was considered to own her personal possessions such as jewellery, clothes and household items. The legal word for these was paraphernalia - which we now use to mean equipment.
