Anti-theists, what if religion is a coping mechanism?

I've noticed alot of people on this board who are constantly calling religion evil and literally want it completely gone but have you ever considered that the only reason it exist is because people can't control the majority of things that happen in their lives, so they need "god" which really just is a hope in the future and thats actually what keeps life going. I understand you not wanting people to try to make you adhere to their religion's rules however, there are an increasing number of people who believe in a god that wants them to be loving, caring, etc. and I don't see why you have to make fun of that. You can call them stupid or weak-minded to need that hope, but at the end of the day, without any religion, most of the world would go batshit crazy so you should think again before trying to wipe it out because it may not produce the world you were hoping for.

Update:

Response to the first person, like I said, some people don't believe in that torture and pain and if they didn't believe in god, they would be worse people and you can say "well if they need god to do good things then they're bad people" but even if thats true, at least it keeps them from doing bad things. Not all religions are the same.

My mom used religion as a coping mechanism and still does (in fact, it's Sunday morning, so she's at church right now), and instead of seeking professional help from a qualified licensed therapist, she's been using church to "get through" having been abused by her father her entire childhood. She got married at 16 and instead of going to a therapist she proceeded to f#ck not one- 6 men, all from different churches we went to as a family! After almost 30 years in a *completely loveless sham of a marriage "following God's will" as she called it. She's now broke looking to get a job as Director of a Battered Women's shelter, because NOW she thinks God told her that she's qualified to do it!!! She still hasn't even seen a therapist for herself!!! Religious cult like rules robbed me of my childhood, & YOU ARE TELLING ME THAT THAT'S THE BEST HOPE PEOPLE HAVE?!? You have got to be F#CKING WITH MY HEAD!!!?!

I don't care what you call it, it holds us back, and it tortures and kills millions of people, often women and kids.

Justify that for me once again, I must have missed something.

edit: whether or not you 'believe' in that, you participate in it. You can't pay the bill for something, then tell me you had nothing to do with it. Without your money it isn't possible. Without your lies, it would not be possible. In other words, without your support it would not be possible.

But instead of protesting to them for soiling your good name, you pay them, and complain to us. You say you don't believe it that, so I will only say to you, stop doing it then.
