Why are people more likely to defend extremism from their side and vilify the other?

Should it not be instead both types of extremism are mocked and ostracized? Just because the extremist shares some of your ideas does not change fact they are generally breaking laws and also guilty of deaths a lot of the time. Would it not make more sense to instead not accept any extremism that harms others and not hide it under the table or the mat?

Update:

Extremists are those who generally cause harm in pursuit of their ideology. Peace if you honestly believe right-wing extremism does not exist, look at Ireland during the Troubles, thank you for playing.

I'm not really sure what the cut off line is for extremism but we should all practice patience, kindness, tenderness, and expecting the best from each other. By the way people drive on the Interstates, it's a serious problem all of us are not doing well.

With respect - one man's patriot is another's terrorist. And I think I'd add, from my own experience, that there is very little black or white, but there are many shades of grey - I know this as someone who defended Irish civilians against Irish terrorists on two sides of a conflict, while I, an Irish citizen, wore what to many of my compatriots was enemy uniform. I was unfortunately unable to defend them against official and unofficial British terrorists wearing that uniform, so I voted with my feet, and thereafter argued for a ceasefire by all involved parties, for years and years. Glad to say it eventually happened - sorry to say that while many Irish terrorists have faced charges over these events, no British terrorists have.

In the words of 'Fat Bastard' of Austin Powers - "Everyone likes the smell of their own brand don't they?"

I can only think of one category of people that have taken on the habit of talking nonstop about the wrong doings of their own, large and small.

    It isn't the norm.

Apparently human history was a long peaceful story until 1492.

It is human nature to be inconsistent regarding defending your side and vilifying the other side. A disinterested pursuit of the truth is rare.

Its called democracy and it works every time. The people, when given power are now a mob. Easily incited, divided and led around like animals. They will use their power to vote themselves into bondage. The mighty one percent figured this out along time ago. . .

Because it's different when my team does it. That also justifies me doing the same thing I complained about the other team doing, because they did it first.

    I'm a partisan, not a hypocrite?

Most conservatives aren't. Most Christians don't defend it either. For instance, when an murderer (abortion doctor) is murdered by a fanatical "Christian", the rest of us condemn the act. When a fanatical Muslim kills innocents, they have parties in the streets of numerous countries.

People are entitled to hold whatever point of view they like.

They are not entitled to murder other people.

That seems pretty straightforward to me.
