Do you comment when you think the best answer is wrong or inadequate?
I always get a little upset, to be honest.
Someone is asking a question, and you have proven and detailed informations, backed by a link. What is chosen as best answer is someone who has written a lot of crap.
Or: Someone is asking f.e. for some "great and unknown songs from a special era or a special style". You remember the era well or like that style and can provide rather unusual songs. What's chosen is a collection of greatest hits, which the asker is commenting with "Great! These are my fav songs!"
It's not that I'm keen on getting the best answer award all the time, but at least I'd like to "lose" to someone whose answer was better or at least fit the question.
What do you do in a case like that? Comment? Start a fight? Or just shrug and move on?
BQ: Why do you think people sometimes choose best answers that are so inadequate?
@ Pippa
you're probably right, and yes, you reply is detailed and adequate. Just give me a little more time to wait if someone has an even more detailed and correct answer. ;)
@ Lucifer
Actually, yes. Glad I'm not alone with that assumption.
@ Elflaeda
Knowing myself, this is exactly the answer you'd get from me. Huge fan of Douglas Adams. And I'd probably be very surprised to get best answer then, as it would've been a joke reply by me.
Thank you everybody, some good replies here, though I'm afraid some of you took my question more serious as it was supposed to be. But it was interesting to hear other voices on that topic. :)

I never comment because in most cases I know that the best answer, if chosen by asker, is just a confirmation of askers opinion. And who am I to judge his opinion?
I know it sucks when you give a detailed answer and are left without the best one but honestly what actual benefit do you gain from it anyway? Sometimes I wonder if people put as half effort in real life answers to real problems as much as they are trying here to show their level of competence.
This is only internet, have fun and don't bother about trivia.
P.S. This is rather long answer in my opinion and quite detailed. Will you choose it as the best one, as it fits the question and I have given full explanation, even if it doesn't say what you wish to hear? :)
EDIT: My point here is not to get the best answer myself, just to show you that we all choose according to our preferences. Some people like it short and simple, they find these kind of stuff I have written annoying, boring, too long and too serious.
And frankly so do I! :)

Nope. Who knows what kind of answer the asker is after? For instance, if I ask what the answer to the ultimate question to life, the universe and everything is, I am NOT after a long and well thought out philosophical treatise as to the origin of all sentient life. I am after the number '42'.
Now then, unless you are familiar with the brilliant work of Douglas Adams, that may seem like a really strange and wrong answer but since I am a big fan, it is a way of seeing how many others are too.

Ugh gosh I feel exactly the same! Whenever I answer a question and mine is obviously the best answer and then I don't get voted as it and some cheap answer does it bugs me! But I just leave it because if I don't I'm afraid I'll sound sad by 'wanting the best answer.' when I'm not really, like you said as long as it's a worthy opponent then that's fine by me. I also hate it when people dislike your answer for giving your own view in a poll or debate so press the dislike button, just because they disagree. We are all entitled to our own opinion.
Just to finish with I'm fine if I don't get picked as Best Answer in this case because I've looked and there's already some detailed and thought-out questions apart from mine ;) But I totally agree with you!

No, I don't think it gives the asker any kind of notification if their question gets a comment. The only way to find out is to go back and check the question after it's been resolved, so there's no point really because I doubt anyone checks up on their resolved questions.
- How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

Sometimes yes. Usually if I have written a detailed answer, and then it goes to a vote and the best answer turns out to a brainless, one-line reply. That always gets a comment!
- Anonymous8 years ago
No.
I only comment if the asker has responded to my answer, and I wish to reply to them. Which is pretty rare.

No not in p/s, as there is a wide area for interpretation. You are lucky if you got a BA here.
Could be true for other more formal categories
