Orthodontists do not do basic hygiene check ups, cleanings, or fillings. They specialize in changing the bone structure of the face (jaws and teeth) so they fit in the mouth and bite down (top to bottom) in a biologically healthy way. They may specialize in surgery to adjust the postion of the facial bones (orthodontic surgeons are sometimes called maxillofacial "jaw/face" surgeons).
Dentists and cosmetic dentists do hygiene related tasks and basic repair of broken or rotted teeth, up to but not including surgical needs. Some dentists have a cursory training in cosmetic orthodontia and are licensed to do basic invisalign and mild traditional braces corrections.
Dental surgeons are responsible for any oral surgery (like wisdom tooth removal, extractions, or implants after tooth extractions).
