Chevy Camaro gas gauge help?
Ok I have been trying to get to the problem of my gas issue I have in my Z28. Put $20 in gas when I was on E and I got 5 gal. So I did the math to see how many miles I should get by the time I ran out and I was 20 miles short when it got to E. I did it again and put another $20 in and got 5 gal and that was at 94,124 miles and I'm at 94,177 and I'm sitting on top of e already. So I am getting 53 miles on this $20 when I should be getting 80 miles. There is no gas leak that my mechanic found so what could possibly be the problem. He said with easy driving I should be getting almost 20 city. Any inputs would be great! O and I changed the spark plugs, switched to synthetic castrol with titanium, and a Wix XP filter, along with a new cold air intake. I still have to change my cap n rotor, and spark plug wires. Also the check gauges light doesn't come on when I am empty either which is a big problem cause I don't know when ill run out.
Sorry its a 1996 Camaro Z28 5.7 LT1

Too bad you didn't jot down the YEAR of the Camaro. Occasionally all you'll need to replace is the fuel float in the gas tank.
What's up with you and figuring out fuel economy? You're supposed to full the tank as full as possible and jot down the mileage on the odometer! Drive the car till the low fuel warning light comes on then fill it again till it's full at the same station and same position at the pump. Jot down the mileage on the odometer on-top of the original start mileage then subtract the miles you have driven. Divide the SECOND gas fill into the miles driven! You have figured out TWO things: #1. Your fuel economy. #2. The absolute number of gallons left in your tank TILL the fuel warning light comes on when you subtract the gallons it took to fill the tank from the total fuel tank capacity as listed in the specifications pages of the glove compartment hand-book.
GM products like new AC-Delco ignition wires every 50,000 miles. New AC-Delco or Denso spark plugs every 30,000 if they are not platinum tipped. 50,000 when they are platinum tipped and 100,000 miles if they are iridium tipped.
Go to rockauto.com to find plugs and ignition wires.
You threw away hard earned money on a SECOND cold air intake!! All you would have had to do is drop in a K&N air filter in the original factory plastic cola air box which had water drains up under the left front fender.
Not one gas gauge on the face of the earth is accurate so there absolutely no sense beating you head against the wall diddling with trying to figure fuel economy your way!

What year are you dealing with?
Not much we can do to help without knowing that.
GM Gas gauges are pretty darn simple to diagnose, just need to know the year for procedure. Even though the Camaro's aren't my forte, GM kept the fuel gauge setup the same in most vehicles. Only one wire to tank relays the tank fuel level, disconnecting the plug near the tank should make the gauge go overfull or under empty (can't recall which way) and grounding the wire to the frame should make it do the exact opposite, if it does, then the gauge and all it's wiring is fine and the problem is the sending unit or its wiring. If it doesn't go overfull and under empty, the problem is not in the tank, and is either the gauge, or the wiring to it.
Edit: Go ahead and test as I've said. It will be that simple. Either on the gauge end, or tank end. Need to determine which, then go forward.
To whoever thumbed both of us down, at least we are trying to help, loser.
Economy can only be factored if your speedometer is correct. Country is correct that you need to fill it all the way up (let the pump shut it off) but do not let it get to the low fuel light, just fill it up after a few days until you get the gauge working. Divide miles driven by how many gallons it takes to refill the tank, that easy.
Country is wrong that the gas gauges are inaccurate. As with all GM gauges, they were actually calibrated before installation, and if one was to remove the gauges, you would note that the number written on the gauge correlates to the resistor used to calibrate the gauge. I have gauges that are 30 years old that read precisely. I have a gauge cluster that came from a vehicle that was rolled and submerged in a river, gauge cluster face ripped off, and they all still work.

My gasoline gauge would not artwork yet I talked to the female who owned it formerly me and he or she pronounced that a storage replaced out the gasoline pump and it nevertheless did no longer artwork. I comprehend that the gasoline pump and sending unit are completed on a similar time. After the artwork the gauge nevertheless did no longer artwork so she took it returned and the storage positioned yet another pump/sending unit (fee: $3 hundred) interior the Camaro and the gauge nevertheless did no longer artwork. So now i'm thinking after interpreting that it perhaps the sprint gasoline gauge. So, you do ought to alter out the full cluster? I even have my camaro on the storage fixing 2 undesirable oil leaks on the instant and the mechanic grow to be telling me he wasn't particular if the ninety six required the full cluster to get replaced or no longer. what's outstanding, new or junk backyard areas? My automobile has 139,000 and after this i'll resell it! i do no longer want to enhance the mileage for resell with an older gauge. what's ultimate?
