Porsche Cayenne or Audi A4?

Hello, I have a simple question. I'm buying used after a few years since University, in business, and male. Deciding between a 2008 Porsche Cayenne or 2009 Audi A4? What do you guys think? Even if you disagree with these two, pick one! I'm curious to hear! Thanks for the help!

Update:

Also I'm looking at the base model Cayenne (below S) and 2.0T (base model with 4 wheel drive)

Update 2:

And the 2008 Cayenne model is the second generation Cayenne, not first.

Actually, the second generation Cayenne was only released in 2011. What you are looking at is probably the first generation facelift (not that it helped much, it's like giving the Elephant Man some Botox and expecting him to go get laid).

It is true that both cars are completely different. The Porsche Cayenne is a luxury SUV (and in my opinion the second best in the world, behind only the truly unbeatable Range Rover Vogue), whereas the Audi A4 is a compact 4-door saloon-though I'm assuming you figured that much out yourself ;p

To me, the Porsche seems like the obvious choice. The new Audi is very good, and while it may not be as agile and involving as the latest BMW 3 Series or the Mercedes C-Class, it still remains one of the best compact saloons on the market today, and it is as desirable as ever. The latest Audi A4 is comfortable and elegant, possibly even more so than its predecessor, and it has the trademark Audi whiff of quality about it. However, the Porsche offers the same, if not superior levels of comfort as the Audi. The Cayenne is the lap of luxury. The cabin completely whisks you away from the outside world, blocking out all engine and wind noise, and you can tell that a whole paddock of cows gave their hides to produce the interior. Like I said, the A4 is also very comfortable, but the Cayenne could be an A8 rival instead. To quote Top Gear, "for an SUV with such a turn of speed and relative composure in the corners, it's amazing how well it rides". Besides the comfort, the Porsche Cayenne is quick, especially for an SUV. Even the entry level Cayenne will be faster than the 2.0L Audi A4, as it is fitted with a 3.6L V6 engine, capable of 290hp. Even though the Porsche weighs a lot more, performance figures are still better than that of the Audi. Sure, you won't be taking it to track any time soon, but the extra speed the Cayenne provides may still come in handy on the motorway. This is all not to mention that the Cayenne, being an SUV, will be considerably more practical than the A4. You get significantly more rear legroom and boot space, as well as the fact that it will be much better off-road, despite the Audi having Four Wheel Drive.

While this all may be well and good, I'm now going to address the elephant in the room. The Cayenne is ******* ugly. Really, I imagine Rosie O'Donnell passed out in a bathtub full of butter in the nude would still be sexier to look at than the Cayenne. With the Audi, you could even call it pretty in a way. Yes, it may look a lot like the old A4. And the A6. And the A8. Okay, that's not the point. The latest A4 is sleek and elegant, and it is without a doubt a lot easier on the eyes than the Cayenne. Besides the looks, there's also the fact that the Porsche will cost more a lot more to own than the Audi. Ignoring servicing costs, the Cayenne is still a big, powerful SUV, meaning it will drink a lot more fuel than the Audi and it will have higher emissions. At the end of the day, it all comes down to whether or not you can live with these two issues. If not, the Audi is a very good car and I'm sure you will enjoy owning it. If you can, however, the Porsche is a bit of a no-brainer.

If you want road clearance, then get the Cayenne.

If you want low to the ground, then the Audi A4.

    Addition:

Audi went out of business in the late 1960s, and were then bought by VW.

Audi models by 1978 were mostly based on VW chassis and drive line.

The Audi A4 most certainly shares almost everything with a Passat.

    { ... B5 (PL45)The B5 platform employs a longitudinal engine placement, which differs from the Volkswagen Group A platform which have been traditionally transversely mounted. This platform (also known as PL45) was introduced with the first-generation Audi A4 and the 1996 Volkswagen Passat. B5 platform cars can be equipped with a multilink front suspension and a Torsen centre differential for quattro or 4motion branded four-wheel drive systems. A long-wheelbase derivative of this platform - originally designed for the Chinese market and being used in the 1999 Volkswagen Passat Lingyu, but ultimately being used for its rebadged version under the Škoda brand, the 2002 Škoda Superb - is referred to as PL45+. ... }

But there is nothing wrong with VW. They are the over all manufacturing company. The engineering teams of each brand still are independent. There is probably no better auto manufacturer in the world.

Audi is the higher end line for VW compared to their own badge.

And while the design of the VW bug did have Hitler's input, Porsche and Audi brands came later and did not. And it was the British that got VW back into civilian production in Germany, after the war.

I would go with the A4 and preferably an S-Line model. A 2008 Cayenne would still somewhat date back to 2005 at the very least and the late '90s when the Cayenne went into development. The '09 A4 was designed up to 2006. The Cayenne would also be too big and more costly to maintain (that's if monetary conservation is of concern)

The guy above clearly has no idea what he's talking about, as the A4 and Passat are unrelated.

One of these is a 4,000 + pound all wheel drive SUV and the other is a relatively small passenger car equipped with either rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. Comparing the two is difficult since they are entirely different classes of vehicles.

The one thing these two cars have in common is that they're both built by VW. VW has owned Audi for many years; the two cars are very much related. In fact, the five cylinder engines going into Passats and Jettas today are based on the 2.2 litre five cylinder Audi engine that I had and loved in my 1987 Audi 5000 S. On the highway, that 2.2 litre engine would get up and run easily with big Cadillac and Mercedes Benz cars, while getting a lot better gas mileage.

The Cayenne is related to the VW Touareg only in general shape, although the two were developed by Audi and Porsche jointly. Most dimensions are not the same, and the engines, transmissions, and running gear in the two vehicles are totally unrelated. The 3.7 litre V6 in the 2008 Cayenne base model provides 290 HP; the normally aspirated 4.8 litre V8 generated 385 HP, and the twin turbocharged version of that V8 kicks out an even 500 HP.

Porsches are not inexpensive to own; however, they don't cost near what many people claim they do. My friends with BMWs tell me their cars have reliability issues. Porsches are regularly rated as among the most reliable automobiles built.

2008 is right in the middle of the era when Audi won all of the awards for interior design (they don't do that as much now). Audis from that era are nicer inside than MBs and much nicer than old, stodgy BMW designs. Audi is a lighter vehicle than either of its German rivals - better gas mileage and more nimble handling in the corners. The A4 cabriolet was chosen by many automotive magazines as the most beautiful convertible of the era.

If you want to haul a lot of gear and go "for real" offroading, you want the SUV. For around town enjoyment in a beautifully designed car, you want the A4. You need to pick from these two based on what you want to use the car for.

    ADDED:

Porsche was acquired by VW just over a year ago. It is now part of the VW Group. The two companies have been doing joint chassis development together for decades, while remaining separate. They have not built engines or transmissions together, although that may now change.

Note that Audi is a very old German auto manufacturer, originally established in 1899 by August Horch as the company A. Horch & Cie., although one of the several companies that would go into creating Audi in the early years was established even earlier - in 1885. Ferdinand Porsche established Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH in 1931. Audi predates Adolph Hitler, and Porsche A.G. was established when the great dictator was a simple Colonel in the German army. Neither was established "... with Hitler's blessing."

These are two very different cars and which one would be best for you is entirely dependent upon your needs. We know nothing about you so all we can say is if you need a lot of room choose the Porsche and if you do not, the Audi A4 will suffice.

Cayenne. I like to off road and the A4 is a total DOG at doing that. (The Porsche is not all that much better but at least you got a bit of ground clearance.)

I would probably pick the Audi A4

An Audi is cheaper to fix. But if your picking an Audi I don't know why you wouldn't just pick a BMW!
