what does rite of passage mean?

Hi, Yahoo community. Been a while since I posted a question. My cousin graduated from college "rite of passage." That's what the bulletin said. Google didn't recognize the phrase. My dictionary and Wikipedia both said that ROP is a major transition and marker in our lives, could be positive or negative. But what does it mean when you graduate that way? Am I to assume that it means that my cousin graduated without honors and probably barely passed? I don't want to ask him if it cvould offend or upset him. Thanks for your help.

When it's applied to graduating from college, it's basically a positive thing. It's like you are grown up now from school and about to enter the real working world. It's a good thing.
