Can't find a job applied to over 500 jobs?

Hi there,

I applied to over 500 jobs mostly minimum wage ones.

But I never get a reply my CV has been checked at least 6 or 7 times and I have experience both voluntary and work.

I also have a degree.

Any tips?

Are you getting interviews? - are you failing the interviews? - Do you smell/look neat/speak clearly?

I would take on board all of the above suggestions and keep looking!

You say you never get a reply, have you tried writing the recruiter and asking why you were not shortlisted? - Don't get upset or argue, just listen to what they have to say, thank them for their help and try to take it on board.

    You could consider

    1. Book a free careers advice appointment with your local college to get the best advice on your chosen career path, and whether meantime you can enroll in any free college courses to further your career path and update your skills.

    2. Check your CV is relevant to each job application. You may have to tweak your skills/terminology to fit a particular vacancy mindset, that is highlight one skill above the other which is more suited to the particular vacancy you are applying for.

    3. Widen your voluntary work by taking a placement which offers a 3 month slot with a graduated work experience scheme and a reference which you can add to your current cv.

    4. Check that you have the requisite experience and qualifications for the position for which you are applying. If you are over qualified for a position some employers can discount your application, perhaps tailor your cv to suit the experience required, rather than include all your qualifications for that role.

    5. Consider a part time role as a stepping stone full time employment, or look for an employer who will fund a study course or module on day release.

    6. Bear in mind the economic climate, keep on trying and you will succeed. Every good wish for the future. Posting a smile for you.

Sending off application after application is a very futile and passive way of gaining employment. Adopt a 3 point strike plan like this - 1. Seek local vacancies in your area, visit them in person (Talk to a manager - if possible) And leave a copy of your resume with the manager 2. Pick up the necessary application form and once completed, return it promptly with 0 errors 3. Follow up 3-5 days later with a phone call, introducing yourself personally, and enquire about how your application is progressing. You could even ask when they are considering scheduling interviews. This is a tried and tested technique, that is pro active, and assertive in gaining employment. Plus it gives you a target base on which to focus on jobs worth pursuing. You can send off forms forever, but unless you follow them up, and show a bit of initiative, they will end up in a pile on top of a cabinet, just like the other 120 applications! Try this technique, you will soon have the pick of the jobs.

Try calling up Recruitment Agencies and Labour hire companies. The way they work is they have a lot of clients looking for workers and the agency takes your skill set and assigns you to the job best suited for you.

Also ask your friends/family etc if where they work is looking for workers and get them to recommend you.

Have someone review your resume. Usually if you take your resume back to Career Services at your university/college they can provide you helpful tips.

I know how you feel. I am going through the same job hunting hell. There doesn't seem to be any hope anymore, which is why I have decided to start my own business.

Do you know anyone who can give you a recommendation. That can help. Also, check with the career office at your college. They can help with your resumes and referrals.

  • You should read your application when you answer. you dont always have to be 100% honest. When they ask have you smoked pot say no
