What is Love from a higher perspective?

What is Love's function in eternity? i am not speaking of mundane love, relationship love, love that is traded as a commodity.

This question is difficult to frame because of the limitation of words, since we can only ascribe human qualities to an unknown. Yet it is said we are Love. How do we know this and what does it mean for our experience here, whether we know or not?

This Love is described as permeating all things...It does not select some and reject others. Then why are we so unaware of Its presence?

If we realize we have no choice in the matter of being Love, could we experience life differently?

    Salaams dear Sirius...

we recommend a series of Books by Maurice Nicoll called Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky. They are books concerning teachings that you are asking about. (Esoteric Christianity.)

    esoteric means inner.

if you are interested you can find some information on-line.

The meaning of true love changes with each different relationship and depends more on its concept of depth, versatility, and complexity. It can take many forms. At the lowest level it is chemistry and biology which explain it as a powerful neurological condition like hunger or thirst, only more permanent. Biology says that it is nothing but the play of hormones. When a man and women are attracted towards each other, they think they are falling but what if some hormones are playing inside them and this is not love but mere attraction. This is pure chemistry; at the lowest point it is not more than that. But how can we explain man love for music or painting. This is surely not hormonal. This is not Chemistry. Van Gogh, a painter, sacrificed his life for Love of painting. This is something higher than chemistry, higher than hormonal. But there is still a higher level; the love of Buddha, the love of Jesus, the love of Krishna. Now it has taken completely different form. Buddha loves everyone, because he has too much to share it. He is burdened by the love released in him; it has to be shared with the trees, with the birds, with people, with animals, with whosoever comes by.

When we say we love somebody, what exactly we mean? If we mean we hold that person. This gives birth to jealousy, because if I lose that person then what happens? I feel empty, lost; therefore I restrict that person. From holding, there is jealousy, insecurity, fear of losing and innumerable conflicts that arises from holding. And this holding is not true love is it? Also, it is neither emotional nor sentimental. Because these are only sensations which are process of thought and surely thought is not true love. Person who is sentimental or emotional cannot know it. This is because the emotions can be stirred negatively where a person is vulnerable to hatred or fight. Therefore, we can say that when there is room for these things, there is no Love. They are all generated from the mind. Mind can only corrupt love but, cannot give birth to it. When these things disappear, and when the things of the mind don’t fill your heart, then there is love. It is only when you do not restrict, when you do not hold, you are not jealous, not greedy, when you have mercy and compassion, when you have consideration for your wife, your children, your neighbour, and your unfortunate servants

God is Love. Love is not something that God does but It's very Nature. There is an all embracing state of Being of which we are an expression in our Natural state. When we drop down into the ego/mind level of experience we forget that inner core of Being and mistakenly imagine we are the atoms and molecules that have taken form from substances of the Creation. From that perspective we are under the laws of Nature and must suffer change,,, and so disappointment and loss.

From a higher perspective Love is, 'The Nature of What Is', the Substance of the Universe, God.

In our present form we talk of love subjectively. I love, I am in love. In the state of matter we lose sight of what is to be love. That is, love allows acceptance of an understanding of what it is to simply be. There is no rejection or conditions on pure love.

we all talk of the true self, the true nature of what we are. Not who we are, but what we are. we spend a life time searching and trying to change to become something better. Yet, if we do not understand or accept that which we are before we impose changes then can we really change at all?

I mean we all have things we work on. If we understand and accept that which we are at any given point, then that experience or existence has become complete. We can then move on. we can hate the act of a person but still love them unconditionally, so it is with self. In our present state of matter, it is difficult to understand and accept.

When a school of dolphins swim together they all experience a unity, when one leaps above the water it experiences individual existence at that point. So it can be with us when we realise that it is more about what we are than who we are. When we realise what we are then we can indeed become all we are meant to become. I think........

Love can be defined two ways. The first is - Love as an Emotion, and second is - Love as an Action.

The former can be of two types - Parasitical or Transactional.

The parasitic form of love in which you take and take. When we become too attached to something or someone we keep taking pleasure from that thing or a person. It is mostly one way emotion, a sado-masochistic form of love.

The Transactional type of love is one in which you give and take. You give with the expectation of something in return. What can I get back out of this relation if I give in something.

But Love can be an Action too. In this Love, you Understand, you Care, you Respect and be Responsible for other/s. But you do this as a duty without any expectation of any returns.

But there is another type of Love as an Action which is the highest form of Love. You do everything out of the natural outpouring of yourself as an essence of your being. Just like how the sun shines, the wind blows, the cloud rains, the flower blooms. They do it as it comes from the essence of their being. This Love is the highest form of Love as an Action.

This is what the soul yearns to do to connect with other souls and thereby connect with the Creator.

That is the purpose of our being. To connect and to remind others of the connection which they have forgotten due to ignorance.

Any action done selflessly without any selfish motive is Love in Action

When i was a kid, i used to see things in a very connected way. If any famous person arrives at our city then for some reason i visit that place after few days i used to feel the air in which they have breath, i used to feel the ground in which they have walked. i felt connection with them. i know this is a funny memory but reflects how much love can grow. Mind can do many tricks, i could also imagine that that air can flow to my house also then i didn't have to leave my bed. :D. That is just a old memory. Now back to your Question.

You are talking about that love which has no hatred involved. That love is know as compassion.

When you are centered at your being not at your mind you feel connected with whole universe. Your awareness goes in every direction touches every things reaches every boundaries. The way a mother feels connected with child in her womb similarly you feel connected with the universe. She needs to be healthy in order to take care for her child. she needs to be happy, she needs to take good care of herself in order to take care for her child. The same way you take good care of yourself in order to care for the whole universe. And how can you do that? you need to be happy for no reason. you need to be a lover without any relationship. When you are in that state of being, when you are simply Love, then whatever you do the whole universe will do. you walk as if the whole universe is walking, you talk as if the whole universe is talking. you listen as if the whole universe is listening. you will be undivided from the whole universe.

The reason why are we so unaware of its presence, is we are so centered with the mind that this love (compassion) doesn't satisfy your desire. You will feel that he loves you as he loves everyone -- you are nothing special.

    from a biblical perspective,

    love is ...

    kindness

    charity

    not jealous

    does not hurt

    is not selfish

    does not backstab

    generous, etc

    get the point ...

tis why i've said often on here ... to note the difference bet. love ~ lust.

    lust is physical

love is NOT physical intimacy. It goes far deeper ...

Love is the law of god which warns us when we do wrong and rewards us when we do right. It guides us to everlasting life, is not biased and is equal for everyone. That is unconditional love.

at a certian point I felt such appreciation for the sacredness of life that there was nothing I could look at and not say "I love"
