Speakers for HDTV, need help?
We are old and need some help deciding on which speakers we need for our new Samsung 46" HD TV. I want something I can also play me iPod or iPad on. We haven't had a tv in 9 years and are a bit baffled. There is a Samsung sound strip at sams but I don't see how to make it work on the iPod.
Any help welcome

Yes - the nice and thin HDTV panels loose a lot of sound quality to get the thin panels.
If you are ... 'technology impatient' - you probably want to look at a Soundbar. This is basically a single, long speaker you put under your HDTV but it mimics a 5.1 speaker system. It's very cool and simple to hook up and use.
I must warn you that there are 3 types of soundbars:
* Basic soundbars that accept left/right RCA jacks. These are NOT compatible with your HDTV
* Soundbars that are "5.1" and accept optical.
* Soundbars that are "5.1" and accept optical and have a small, external subwoofer
You want the third type if you want music and halfway decent sound.
I also strongly recommend you only look at soundbars from speaker companies. I love Samsung televisions - but their speakers are kind of add-on quality. A soundbar from Klipsch, Polk, Boston, Definitive, Energy, etc., will probably sound better simply because these companies exist by making speakers.
I actually found a $200 unit without a separate subwoofer from a good company called "Energy". I put the link below. It also lets you hook up an optical cable from your Samsung television, and has left/right RCA inputs which you can use from your mp3 player.
You will also need:
* An optical cable long enough to reach from behind your Samsung to the sound bar (use Amazon)
* A 3.5mm to red/white RCA male cable to hook up your iPod (Radio Shack)
You can also go to BestBuy - but tell the salesman exactly that you want both a optical input and left/right stereo inputs on a soundbar.
Good Luck.
