Libertarian socialism was a success in revolutionary Spain, so why do people say that socialism was a failure?

8 million people participated in this anarcho-socialist experiment for 3 years between 1936 and 1939. Despite war with the fascists and despite opposition from various political parties (not to mention the Soviet-backed Communists), they prospered during this period. And this was without money, capitalists, bosses, landlords and government. In fact, industries, factories, mills, workshops, transportation services, public services and utilities were run by the workers themselves. They —through unions and various low-level committees — managed to successfully reorganize society so that they could eliminate poverty, reach a level of freedom that has rarely been seen before and yet maintain a higher pace of economic progress than they had before.

Eventually they were crushed by the fascists, who were supported by Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, but nothing points to that socialism in Spain would have been a failure if the socialists had won the war.

Now that there clearly is an example of how socialism can be successful and yet maximize freedom, why do people say that socialism has failed?

Finally, to quote the socialist author George Orwell (author of 1984 and Animal Farm) who volunteered in the Spanish Revolution against the fascists. said that it "shows you what human beings are like when they are trying to behave as human beings and not as cogs in the capitalist machine."

Update:

"Isn't it great how people pull together during a war. Maybe that's what Communism needs to function, continuous war"

Except it wasn't communism, but socialism and anarchism.

Update 2:

Actually, it probably was communism in many areas. My bad. But at least it was the kind of communism that needed no government.

Update 3:

"I would not consider any system which cannot peform a basic function such as self-preservation to be "successful." "

They had little support from other countries while the German and Italian fascists pushed resources and men to the Spanish fascists. Do you blame the socialists for losing the war?

Well that definitely was socialism, despite what the ignorant people say. They should read Orwell's book on Catalonia, if they've even heard of Orwell.

But i don't agree it was a success. Partly it fell apart because the anarchists refused to organise the state at all, which left it open to Stalinists/reformists to assume control and bicker over/bend to Stalin's twisted will.

This why I'm not an anarchist. You need to organise these things. If you don't, the enemies will.

The Socialist ideology is a theory , fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and which holds forth beliefs that have no basis in reality. Under socialism, incentives either play a minimal role or are ignored totally. A centrally planned economy without market prices or profits, where property is owned by the state, is a system without an effective incentive mechanism to direct economic activity. By failing to emphasize incentives, socialism is a theory inconsistent with human nature and is therefore doomed to fail. Socialism is based on the theory that incentives don't matter!

In my opinion Communism is an extreme form of Socialism..

I would not consider any system which cannot peform a basic function such as self-preservation to be "successful."

EDIT: "Do you blame the socialists for losing the war?"

    Yes.

America would have been crushed by England.....EXCEPT the US could effectively use foreign policy, and they found allies. Republican Spain was unable to get aid from anyone except the Soviets.

Apparently, you have not been to Spain recently. They are now experiencing the results of their democratic socialist experiment. They have endemic unemployment of over 20% with no end to their depression. Their youth under age 30 have unemployment of over 50%. A majority of young people must depend on their parents for existence. Who is going to care for this young group's children? Meanwhile employers refuse to hire people even if they need them because of draconian socialistic labor laws.

Isn't being crushed a definition of failure?

Fascism can at least claim to have survived the failures of Hitler and Mussolini until Franco died.

Who says that? Sadly, people in the West are too greedy to entertain the idea of sharing and fellow feeling.
