What pet fish can i keep in a 10 gallon tank?
I am buying a fish tank that comes with a light hood and filter and might buy a heater if needed. What tropical or freshwater fish can live in a 10 gallon tank? Other than a betta fish.

You will need a heater. No cold water fish is small enough to fit in there. Tropical fish are your best go.
Unfortunately ten gallon tanks, even well planted ones, can only support so much! You could get a group of four-five guppies. I'm always a bit iffy on that though.
Your best bet for a happy aquarium would really be fish that are small and can live in singles or smaller groups. Like a betta and three African dwarf frogs. That's what I have in my planted ten gallon. ^_^
You could also go with three platies of your color choice. I know, you may question that because usually when you buy platies they're smaller...however, they do get three+ inches long at full maturity, and they'll want and need the space.
If you want more of a variety, I would go with a betta for starters. I know you said other than, but it's really a perfect setting for a good sized male betta (INSTEAD of the male betta, you can do all these same things with a single male dwarf or honey gourami of your color choice). You can add in either frogs or dwarf corydoras. You may even be able to support four dwarf cories and two African Dwarf Frogs with a betta if you have a well planted tank with good filtration, but you do run the risk of injuries to the dwarf cories with frogs. I have cories and frogs together, but mine are larger cory species and are let along, the frogs may well leave the dwarves alone as well. You don't want any cory type that gets over two inches in there because they MUST have a group of four-five minimum. You could also go with six or seven Kuhli loaches with a betta. They have a very low bioload and usually get on with them provided enough hiding spots. No frogs though, they may eat the loaches.
Keep in mind that if you get cories or loaches, they absolutely must have sand substrate. Gravel will kill them eventually and risks injury because they hit the ground a lot. And also, a heater is required for all tropical fish. Most need temps 76-82 degrees, bettas need it at a minimum of 78 and all other fish named either like it there or can handle it. Loaches wont like it any higher and neither will frogs.

Community Fish. They are labeled when you go to stores to buy them.
The general rule is 1 inch per fish. So in theory, 10 fish that are all about an inch can survive.
Get what you think looks nice in the tank. Personally, I would get some Cory Catfish (2-3) to give the bottom of your tank activity, while the middle/top can be inhabited by Plecos, Guppies, Platys, Mollies Skirt Tetras, among others.

Wow, Nicky has some atrociously stocked tanks! 95% of the fish she listed need tanks more like 30-55 gallons!
Read this, this is my guide as I'm an author on the site:

A 10g is a very small tank with limited stocking. Make sure you fully cycle the tank first!

We have 8 10 gallon aquariums in our home with a variety of fish. The full grown size of the fish will determine if they can stay in this size tank or not so do research on that but our tanks are as follows
1- 2 female guppies 2 male guppies 1 pleonasms0 commets, 1 apple snale
3- 4 fan tailed goldfish
4 5 freshwater angel fish
5- 20 glo fish
6- 15 mollies (sex ranges as does the number because they breed)
7-4 silver fin sharks 2 apple snails
8-4 bala sharks.
We also have 2 5 gallon tanks and I suppose you could just have more fish in a 10 gallon of these
1- Jewel Cichlid , Electric Blue Cichlid. Bumblebee cichlid
2 4 white fin rosy tetras and 4 ghost shrimp
I also have a 1 gallon lava lamp aquarium that has 5 rosys

10 gallons isn't much to work with. I recommend 4-5 male Guppies (no females!). That will fully stock it.
