I got into an accident without insurance-help!?

I bought a second vehicle, but didn't get insurance on it because I hardly drove it and money was tight right then, Then I got into an accident. There was no damage to my car, but my passenger got hurt--needing surgery. I paid all her missed wages and her rent, etc. until she healed. Now her insurance company is coming after me. What would be the best thing to do at this time?

You will have to face up to this.

The person who said your friend has "stabbed you in the back" is utterly wrong. It is right that she should have compensation and you will ultimately have to pay this from your own pocket.

Note that the NHS does not pay for everything resulting from motor accidents so you can expect some bills from them too. But that is the price you have to pay for driving while uninsured.

You are very fortunate that your passenger did not suffer "life changing" injuries such as paralysis or other damage preventing her from living a normal life or working. The costs of these run into ££millions, which is actually more expensive than death.

You will have to make an arrangement with her insurers to repay the money in a manageable time frame that is affordable for you. It could be several ££thousands when everything has been added up and you get the final bill.

I expect that you will also be facing criminal charges for driving while uninsured. This will cost you a heavy fine and points, possibly a ban. You will also have a record which means future insurance premiums will be several times what they would have been if you had taken insurance properly in the first place.

Don't tell the magistrate that you did not buy insurance because "money was tight". This is never accepted as an excuse. He will (correctly) tell you that you should not have driven in that case, and may even increase your fine.

Do you have proof of all payments made for her rent and wages? If so, get the documents and submit to the insurance company.

YOU still owe for her injuries, but possibly with your prior payments, could reduce the amount you will owe. On any injury claim, you DO NOT owe for someones rent, but you would owe for wages.

My guess is that you thought (stupidly) that by paying wages and her rent, that it would absolve you of your responsibility on her injury, which is doesn't.

For someone to have surgery due to an accident, is not a minor accident.

Money may have been tight, but it is going to get a lot tighter now, since you will need to most likely get a payment plan set up to pay back ALL for your negligence in this accident.

The best thing to do at this time. Move to somewhere untraceable, Afghanistan springs to mind.

Otherwise stay and face the music.

You've made no mention of other vehicles or property involved, don't forget those insurance companies will come calling soon as well.

Get a solicitor , but really its too late. You should not drive uninsured because you may well get in an accident and injure someone.

You need to face up to the consequences of your actions. You should pay adequate compensation to the passenger , if its a lot of money then get a loan.

You'll have to pay the costs...simple as that - you drove illegally and your friend was hurt....what if you had killed somebody?? thank your lucky stars that you didn't!! The Insurers want their money!

No-one on here can say for sure but you're screwed.

You'll be personally responsible for her costs, maybe running into several thousand pounds, and don't expect to keep hold of your driving licence if you even have one.
