cos(x) is an even function. it is symmetric across x = 0. this means that cos(x) = cos(-x).
2.
sin(x) is an odd function. it has 180 degree rotational symmetry around the origin. this means that sin(-x) = -sin(x). think of the graph of y = x, another odd function. notice that if x = 3, y = 3, and if x = -3, y = -3.
