Replacing hard drive in Macbook Pro with SSD?

My hard drive on my Macbook Pro has died. Apple Store are saying I can replace it with the same thing for about £50 - or with an SSD for £150... SSD sounds very appealing - though I don't know a lot about the pros and cons. Any tips about whether to go for it and what models are good would be really appreciated!

I think my Macbook had 300GB hard drive space (can't access it as I can't get it to startup), 13" and is 2-3 years old. I do various things like video editing and graphic design on it. Thanks in advance! X

Update:

Hi Perry, Thank you!! That's really useful to know - I'll try and look up the model of my HDD to see if it's been recalled - and get a replacement HDD in the meantime. Does this mean that there is a model/make of HDD that I should avoid? I need a SATA II 2.5 inch drive.

Double check your HDD. There was. Recall on HDD. Apple is bad when it comes to admitting fault. Don't get the SSD it's nice but will be obsolete soon. SSD technology is moving fast. Get the OEM recommended HDD. And sell your MacBook Asap before a new one comes out.

No idea what Perry is talking about - do you have an iMac with a 1TB Seagate drive?

Any name brand 2.5" SATA drive will be fine. If you need a fast start up then the SSD version will be of use otherwise a standard drive will offer far more storage space.

Personally I would go with a small SSD and an external networked drive but it would depend how you use the MacBook.

You can put it in your self or any competent local computer repair chop will do it for you.
