Hot? Cold? and Lukewarm? (Rev 3:15)?
“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” (Rev 3:15-17)
What does being cold, hot and lukewarm mean?
Bible Puzzle #2. :)
@Dan you're identifying the three attributes as "zeal"
zeal is subjective... if i fasts twice a week, pray three times a day and preach to atleast four people a week i would consider myself to be "hot"
but if another person who fasts four times a week, pray six times a day and preach to atleast eight people a week, compared to the other person i would just be a casual believer, wouldn't it?
and they could use this verse to condemn Christians who they think are complacent and lackadaisical. they would define "hot" in terms of their own zeal.
No matter how zealous or enthusiastic you may be, there will always be someone more zealous who makes you look lukewarm by comparison. The only appropriate response is one of competitive insecurity.
Don't forget, these are for Christians (Laodecians specifically)... it's one of the seven churches. :)
Some have defined “cold” as meaning “being opposed to God” or “rejecting the truth outright.” If so, why would Jesus say, “I wish you were hot or cold”? Why would Jesus want anyone to reject the truth of the gospel? That doesn’t make sense either.
You might say, “It’s not about works, it’s about attitude (or passion as what Jackie stated). God looks at the heart.” But Jesus did not say to the Laodiceans, “I know your heart.” He said, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.” There was clearly something they were doing that made them lukewarm and unacceptable. So what was it?
i already gave you a hint :) "I know your deeds" they were clearly doing something odd.. :)
btw, i'll say the answer when the "choose best answer" shows. :)
@Neti, yet faith is all sufficient for righteousness and justification... even James said it (since you're quoting from James)
.... Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’ and he was called God’s friend.” (Jas 2:23)
@Dan so what are these two kinds of faith of which you speak? xD
how can you trust without completely trusting? which means you do not trust at all?
meh, i was gonna ask a bible puzzle about james... but here's james 2:24
Unbelieving believers
I know you will find this hard to believe, but I have heard of Christians who claim to have faith, but they don’t heal the sick. “Now listen,” as James would say, if you are fully persuaded that God heals the sick, then act on that persuasion and start healing the sick!
5:14: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray…”
What so special about the elders? Well hopefully they will be fully persuaded that God wants to heal you! Elders lead by example.
Some people are not entirely sure that God still heals the sick. They’re in two minds about this healing business. They are not fully persuaded. When they pray people don’t get healed and their doubt becomes self-fulfilling. James writes about this:
“Let him ask in faith, with no doubting for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (Jas 1:6-8)
What limits our faith? Unbelief, or to use James’ words, doubt and uncertainty. To the degree that you are uncertain about God’s will, to that degree you are handicapped by unbelief.
The essence of James 2:24 is this: a believer isn’t one who merely believes God in his heart, he reveals God through his actions. The difference between you and your unsaved neighbor is not just a set of beliefs, it is the life of Christ in you and revealed through you. You not only think differently, you act differently and what you do flows from what you believe. If you don’t believe God heals the sick, you won’t pray for the sick and they won’t get healed. You are no different from your unbelieving neighbor in this regard. But if you do believe that Jesus provided for our healing 2000 years ago (1 Pet 2:24), then you will pray for the sick and you will heal them.
To the church James is saying, don’t just believe God, reveal Him!
since this post has become a wall of text...
the ===answer to the bible puzzle==== will be posted here
ah i see.. anyway for dan and neti.. about james, i explained it ^ up dur...

In Revelation 3:14-21, the Lord is describing the “lukewarm” heart attitude of those in the Laodicean church, an attitude manifested by their deeds. They were neither cold nor hot in relation to God, just lukewarm. Beverages are better either cold or hot. Similarly, the Lord would rather that people be either hot (spiritually on fire for Him) or cold (rejecting Him outright). The Laodiceans understood the analogy because their city drinking water came from a spring six miles to the south over an aqueduct, and it arrived disgustingly lukewarm. It was not hot like the nearby hot springs that people bathed in, nor was it refreshingly cold for drinking. It was lukewarm, good for nothing. In fact, it was nauseating, and that was the Lord’s response to the Laodiceans—they sickened Him.

Hot is when a person has a strong love and zeal to do God's will and he does it with all that he has.
Warm is when a person tries to be apart of both worlds. He tries to do God's will and tries to get all he can out the world. The bible says that we can't serve two masters because we will love one and hate the other. This is what happens when people strive for the things in the world, their love for God cools off making them lukewarm.
Cold is when a person does nothing for God. They are only concerned about themselves.

Cold - no interest in God or religious activity.
Lukewarm - faking interest in God or using religion to fulfill selfish motives. Can also mean believing in God, but not responding to him.
Hot - Loving God and showing it with your life and actions.
EDIT
No, it is not zeal. James describes two kinds of faith and they coincide with lukewarm and hot. They are not always clear visible characteristics that anyone can note, but they are things that we can discover within ourselves.
Lukewarm is worse than lack of belief because it is a form of hypocrisy. For the person that "believes" but is unwilling to submit to God, there is little hope. On the other hand, the cold can come to believe and be saved by living faith.
EDIT2
The two kinds of faith are living and dead faith. Living faith produces evidence, dead faith does not. Even so, we cannot always tell what is going in others because it is possible to fake evidence.

Cold or hot is passionate. Lukewarm is not really caring. In the second portion, the author seems to be speaking of people who are satisfied with life, and self-satisfied, and just coasting along: no passion about advancing the reign of the Messiah or the coming Kingdom; no concern for those who are not so well off; unable even to realize what they lack. Not even a sense of joy over salvation.

Ok this is talking about "Passion." In Bible sense passion is compared with suffering. Like in "The Passion of Christ." His suffering great, so is His passion. How deeply, He or we feel things. How much do we really care? For Love to work well, the two involved should be about equal in their mutual feelings. If one cares so deeply, the other can take it or leave it..no big deal? This relationship has little chance of working out. For us to be Saved, we have to put ourselves out there, sincere, truthful, really mean & want Jesus...with a Passion! Don't have this? He will not accept anything less.

Hot is you love God and accepted what Jesus did on the cross.
Cold is you hate God and want nothing to do with Him.
Lukewarm is you have no interest either way and could care less

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
James 2:26
Abraham was justified by works when he offered Issac his son upon the altar.
James 2:21
Faith is made perfect by works.
James 2:23

You are either spiritually speaking, refreshingly cold, or zealously hot. Lukewarm, is like sitting on a fence. You aren't committed to anything, spiritually.
