Terrible mildew smell in carpet?

Early this morning we noticed a really strong mildew smell in our home. After doing some exploring we found that our 3 year old has been sneakily dumping juice and water onto a rug in his closet. It was soaked, and now the entire house smells horribly of intense mold/mildew. We threw out the rug, cleaned the area with laundry soap and bleach and put a dehumidifier in his room. But the smell is still awful. How long does it typically take to rid it? Should we be doing something more and can this make us sick? Thanks for your input.

The same thing happened to my daughter, only it was her cat using her rug as his "bathroom". I definitely recommend getting a carpet & hard floor cleaner Co. to clean & deoderize the area really well.

Mold can affect your families health badly. Have the professionals take care of it because nothing is worth the health of your family. It is worth every penny you spend to keep your home clean & your family safe.

When things get back to normal, you will be so happy again. : )

I doubt that you'll get sick, unless someone is allergic to the type of mold spores that are there. It should go away in a couple days if you have good circulation (windows open if possible) If it lingers look for additional wet areas, or it possibly went through the flooring. Try using a dehumidifier. Be very careful using bleach; it can be much more harmful to you than mold spores.
